There's such a thing as telling a person that if he repeats a prayer he'll be saved, and then the person believes it. But that isn't what happened here. The Pharisees and Sadducees knew that they had rejected John's message of repentance, but they wanted to be associated with him anyway. We don't know if their motives were honor, seizing control of the movement, or something else, but we know that their motive wasn't Godliness.
A viper is a person who knowingly pretends to be part of Christianity.
No fear of Divine wrath, no fruit of repentance

In Matthew 12:34, Jesus said "Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks."
Vipers will tell whatever lies are necessary to get what they want from Christianity. We had unsaved parents promise to obey the rules of our Christian school and then launch slander campaigns on teachers who made their children behave. Here in Mexico, we have seen unsaved people gain leadership positions in Christian orphanages and then fight to turn the orphanage against God and His Word.
One of the most successful homosexual outreach organizations in Mexico began as a Christian orphanage that put unsaved people on the board. John the Baptist did not believe the promises of vipers; he refused to let them in.

A common defense of letting vipers in is "This way we can minister to them." A more truthful defense would be "We need their money." Christian organizations will let wealthy donors have leadership positions, while they exclude hard-working Christians who do not have wealth.
I found a discussion on the Christian orphanage here that was taken over by homosexuals. The posters were praising the orphanage because while they volunteered there nobody gave them any problems about their religion. Compromising God's Word is not an effective soul-winning tool.
