Rick...I couldn't agree with you more. On every point you made.

I do agree...we can't cripple economies with it.

What disappoints me most, is the times companies stumped research (like some car companies I believe have...before the economic downturn and now what are they going to do? throw money into research for kicks? no way.), the lack of innovation (patentable and useful products that can be put out into the market)...the lack of implementation of innovation...and the lack of research for batteries for electric cars...and *practical* solar energy research and *practical* hydrogen research (ie not using platinum)...oh...and fear of nuclear! As you said, Rick, not starting.

There's a...last minute desperate measure that scientists are basically leaning on if worst comes to worst. I'll have to find the link, but it's lenses reflecting sunrays so that they're only concentrated in x spots (and have enough light to see of course) and these spots will be used for solar energy and powering the world that way. It bothers me. Messing with nature that much. I hope we don't have to resort to that.

You talking about solar oven technology?
It IS viable.

Rick you do make much sense, nice post. Now do you know that we can make a car run on water. Why don't we do that, because it is not politically correct, the rich people will throw a fit.
When I was in Spain some guy invented a water running car but they have shut him up soon. We also have a cure for cancer made out of hemp seed oil, now the man is in jail for curing his fathers fatal cancer, with no harmful side effects. I know it is Marijuana but i read that it had no side effects taking as an oil base. You be surprise how this world's government dictates to it's people even when they come up with such discovery. Only the rich get's away with murder. They want us all sick and dead, and if you do not believe me, than you must see this from the rich who run this country. This is still on the subject, that no matter what good solution we will find no good cure for all that is going on.:nono

No...I'm not, but that's fantastic progress in itself. What I'm talking about is solar to power a massive grid (imagine powering at least half the United States with it) OR hydrogen production.

The problem with the massive grid is that at the present moment it's too inefficient. It's getting there though. There's a great article about it from Scientific American. There's some real promise with solar energy. I just hope we're smart enough to implement it.
http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=a-solar-grand-plan

The problem with hydrogen producing solar energy is the model's photosynthesis - 1% efficient - and most processes being researched use platinum. I don't recall any palladium research or other metals being used though I was mainly focusing on platinum.

Solar power has a problem in that the silicon used in the cells isn't easy to come by. And the cell's output begins to deteriorate over time once exposed to sunlight. They need replaced every 15 years or so much like shingles on a roof. And even grade A cells have a low efficiency of 15% tops of producing electricity from the sunlight required.
They also use other expensive materials such as silver and electronics grade aluminum in pastes that forms the gridlines and backplane. Hydrofluoric acid, potassium hydroxide and silane gas are just a few extremely toxic materials used in their production. Very nasty stuff.
I used to work for Solar Power Industries manufacturing solar cells. 90% of our production was shipped to Germany since they have no energy resources of their own and were willing to pay the high cost. For the US solar power just isn't as economical as other common sources of energy.
SPI got grants from time to time from the government to find alternative materials to replace the silicon required but nothing really came of it. There were many a day spent cleaning equipment simply because we didn't have the silicon to work with.

Anyway, so far the greatest advance in batteries has been with the use of lithium. These batteries are very powerful considering the ratio of weight to power output. And they are rechargeable. We use a lot of them in the gas sensing equipment manufactured where I presently work, Mine Safely Appliance. I'm very impressed with them but again they are expensive and the materials used can get scarce depending on the market. The ones we use measure about 2.5" x 1.5" x 3/8" @ 3.7 AH. Puncture one with a screwdriver and they have the power and potential to quickly burst into flame by thermal runaway. Some do, some don't. I know. I've played with more than a few scraped batteries. :shades
The general public hasn't really been made aware of the safely hazards of using these things in automobiles. Though there have been some advances in suppressing thermal runaway lithium batteries have the potential to explode if punctured, shorted or overcharged. And considering the size of batteries required a driver could be sitting on a good sized bomb even in a low speed accident.
On top of that we don't have the power transmission lines in place to handle the extra loads of recharging if/when electric power becomes popular for cars. And of course it's back to the same old problem of producing enough electricity.

How’s this for global warming Isaiah 30:26 seven times hotter 700 degrees. Also described in Revelation 16:8 The fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and the sun was given power to scorch people with fire. They were seared by the intense heat and they cursed the name of God, who had control over these plagues, but they refused to repent and glorify him.

Very interesting, Rick.

Ouch...days of cleaning equipment :\ I had fun with acid/base bath days when I didn't have much else to do due to not having something or what not.
But playing with those batteries sounds fun ;) *gets out the thermite and the liquid nitrogen*

The prof I researched for in undergrad is very big on solar energy. Belongs to Union of Concerned Scientists, has a few things to read by his door on peak oil on the hydrogen economy, etc. Our ideal is to split water to produce H2 (and O2) with the complexes we use eventually but even he admitted that our model is 1% efficient.

We had this speaker come in on solar energy - business person - was a political science major in college iirc. The problem with his speech is that it was way too much of his life's story rather than the science. Anyway he never really talked about the faults of the technology. And he had some really crazy idea. All I can remember exactly about it is that it's something that would have to be in the air and be a square mile or so. We all thought that was loony. Block light, planes flying, etc...

And you're right - the public hasn't been made aware. And they should be. And they still think hydrogen in a fuel cell's going to BOOM. I've seen a good amount of people say it's unlikely to go BOOM. But if those batteries do...Then I'd like to see a comparison in safety. But again problem with hydrogen too is infrastructure, how to obtain the hydrogen in a "green" manner, etc. It would be such an ideal solution though...emitting water...

Although...I just thought of this....If drivers knew they were sitting on a bomb, then I wonder if they'd be safer drivers... :P

No, we don't have the infrastructure for hydrogen. But then, we didn't have many gasoline stations, paved roads or even Howard Johnsons when cars were first becoming popular. :D All that followed later.

Carbon, no matter how hard we try to clean the air it will get hotter.
About our grand children having a good environment forget about it being good.
Nobody wants to face that we are living in the last days, the days of no return.
From Obama--Clinton administration, it is all downfall from there on, meaning from January 22, 2009 is countdown for all of us Christians.
About our Grand children having clean air, we do not need Al Gore but Jesus.
I sound negative because I live in the real evil world. I do not live with my eyes closed, if something like good will happen than it will be the Antichrist doing it because he will fool the world, but I have looked at all angles of Antichrist so he will not fool me. Right now the Antichrist is at work behind the scenes, he is provoking all the chaos and the collapses of the world to bring in the New World Order.
Things must get real bad because he brings prosperity out of chaos.
So if we want to point guns at somebody point the gun at China-- because she is the biggest polluter in the world not us, and how do we suppose to force China into cleaning her own air?
We must not trust any New Ager to tell us how to clean our air because they all work for Satan.
The Lord will come and fix our problems and only He i will trust. :amen :) blessings in Yeshua's name. Anna
PS i love the movie expel that is what is going on in the real life.

RE:
Hydrogen infrastructure

One thing we can't do is simply say, "Ok, we need a hydrogen infrastructure to run these cars. Let's do that."

It doesn't work that way. Is there a profit in "Let's do that."? If not then there's not much use building cars that won't have the fuel readily available. It just doesn't make sense.

The early autos came along, free enterprise saw the need/demand for more gasoline supply, saw there was a buck to be made doing it and WALLA! Gasoline infrastructure.
If I build the ideal car for the environment that runs on doorknobs but I can't get enough doorknobs then building the car is a fruitless effort. And we can't just assume the government will supply the doorknobs. That's not how it works.

Bottom line:
No matter what advanced technology research uncovers if it's not profitable/economical/practical there's no sense in pushing it onto the assembly line.

Agreed. It can't go through the pipelines as we have them. Needs different materials. Would have to change gas stations into hydrogen stations. etc etc etc and it would NOT be a small matter. Nor would it be quick. Nor cheap. And IMHO it won't be practical in another 100 years.

LOL YOU GLOBAL WARMING PEOPLE.
So much for Al Gore and all his cohorts! Here is the proof about your global warming theory.
Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. Now to all the global warming people what say you? :rolling :confused :screwloose you need more :help lets go at it. :mad as hell for all your lies...........

Terms have changed over time. At first the going phrase was Global Warming. That became Climate Change and now I hear the term Climate Shift going around.

did you hear about the british parents who objected to their kid being subjected to al gores inconvinient truth at school, and so took it to court? the judge looked at alot of testimony and evan, hillariously, asked some very pointed questions to some ADVOCATES of the film, who under oath were forced to admit to some incovinient truthes.the judge ruled 90% of the film was inacurate and ordered any showing of it must be acomponied by opposing viewpoints.
