And I am not sure if that was a compliment or not, I think it was neutral really.

MA, you missed the 4th option also:

4) Studying Bible origins is all fine and dandy, except it tends to take up time that SHOULD be used to study the WORD of GOD.

The thing about scholarship is that you're supposed to study something and decide what it is at the end, not the beginning. If you start with the view that the Bible is divine and complete Truth and won't consider any alternatives then you're not a scholar, you're a preacher.
