Adam Homosapien, Neanderthal. Or Something Else?

Hey All,
The Bible says God created man. What type of man was Adam? homosapien? Neanderthal? Something else? The common answer is homosapien.
If so from where did neanderthal man come? Maybe more accurate, from when did neanderthal man come? Did he exist prior to Adam? Or between Adam and the flood?
Genesis 6:1-4 talks about the sons of God; the "nephilim." The offspring between they and the daughters of men, were considered hybrids--part human. However, these children became physical giants. Neanderthals are believed to be between 5' & 5'8". So it does not seem likely that the two are the same.
Can we explain Neanderthals biblically? Any thoughts? Keep walking everybody.
