“All men seek happiness, This is without exception. Whatever different means they employ, they all tend to this end. The cause of some going to war, and of others avoiding it, is the same desire in both, attended with different views. The will never takes the least step but to this object. This is the motive of every action of every man, even of those who hang themselves.†- Blaise Pascal

How does this fit with rejoicing in the glory of God?

The problem being that happiness depends on outward circumstances.. always changing.

But the joy of the Lord is within -and He never changes!

I think this is definitely true. But to answer your question

How does this fit with rejoicing in the glory of God?

I am going to look to John Piper and his book Desiring God (which I recommend to you highly). He says in his book that the Heidelberg Catechism says that "The chief end of man is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever." John Piper makes the case in his book that this is the same as "The chief end of man is to glorify God by enjoying him forever."

Really, do get that book. It's worth every penny!
