Alternative Swear Words?

So, some may know I have a bit of a swearing issue and I'm adamant to fix this now. The Bible is pretty clear that swearing isn't cool and I get it. My question is, if swearing is a condition of the heart (Luke 6:45), does that mean that saying "darn", "fudge", "shoot", "snap", and other words and phrases that take the place of a swear are just as bad? Or does God recognize that there is a difference and that you are striving to not use historically offensive words?

Oh and if anyone wants to share some of their funny alternatives, feel free. I need some good material if I am gonna over come this relatively difficult task!

It is always better that your words are few especially for people with problems controlling tongue.

I have no idea what "fudge", "shoot" or "snap" mean, but the meanings have to be explored and avoided if they are offensive. "Darn" is equivalent to condemning someone, we should also avoid saying it ....

yeah im the same way. Something i overlook in my life. I would think that there shouldn't be any alternative words to swear. Alternatives are approximations which alternatively have the same meaning. I think it has to do with control, put your faith in god and pray about it morning and night.

I still curse severely.
I used to use gods name in profoundly negative ways. One day i went to bed, analyzing the sins of that day, trying to reflect. And one thing in particular was bothering me: the fact that i was using gods name in vein. I said to the lord that i will put everything i got into not doing this anymore. Morning i prayed about it. During the day i would slip up, and immediately repent afterwards. Night i would pray about it. Further after, weeks of trying to control myself i would catch myself before saying it. And with much of this self training and fear of god, i almost completely halted even the THOUGHT of using his name in vein. However i do admit to occasionally slipping up when i get uncontrollably angry. But there should be no excuse.

About 1956 i ate ivory soap for saying 'heck' so i went out to the trap door where the little frogs were and said 'heck' to them for about ever...

Swearing or ugly words make folks look small. I use the term B_, but i never would use the full words! they are that different to me...

I never heard much slang and NEVER a swear word from Dad... Yes dad was a pastor but he also worked full time in the woods falling timber.... A ruff bunch of guys .... they talked ugly, dad held to his convictions. They tested him for a while poked fun at him made sure they told the dirty jokes in ear shot... they learned to respect and appreciate him. They got to the point of remembering to pick him up a Pepsi when they got beer. and calling on him when in need....

Ha! Seriously, until my early 20's, I has such a foul mouth I'd drop the F-bomb and not even know I said it. My brother even pulled me aside one time and told me to stop cussing so much... I did it so freely I didn't even know when I was saying it!

In all, I've done very good. However, about 10 years ago I was on the Church's men's baseball team in the outfield (playing another church) and missed a catch. Can't believe I yelled what I yelled.... No idea where that came from....

Alternative swear words are still swear words in their intent. ;) I like to remember Proverbs 4:24 whenever I have the urge to swear with alternative swear words, so maybe it will help you as well.

Keep your mouth free of perversity; keep corrupt talk far from your lips.

The best advice I can give to break the habit of swearing is to praise the Lord instead of spreading perversity.

I'm no angel in the swear department, but I'm not sure if using alternative words is the answer. It feels like using an alt word is masking the real urge to say something inappropriate and does not address the root of the issue.

I don't have the answers on how to fix this. I can only say that I try to be more aware of what I'm doing when I get the urge to "say" something rude. Sometimes I manage to take a deep breath and say Father help me. Other times, during that pause, when I can choose to do the right thing, I decide that I'm pissed (another rude word) and deliberately say what I want.

So I suspect that when we pray, we should pray against the sin of pride....the pride that says Im right, they are wrong and I have a right to be upset. The control we are looking for starts with our desire....the desire to please God or do what we feel like doing.

Currently, I call people numbnuts and immediately feel afterwards that it was not neccessary to say.

Does it depend on the circumstances? Okay, you live in the country, your closest neighbor is 1/2 mile away, nobody is at home except you, and you're building a deck on your home. Then it happens. You hit your thumb with the hammer. If you let out a flurry of expletives, is it sinful or just an expression of anger, frustration, embarrassment, and sorrow all rolled into one?

You hit your thumb with the hammer. If you let out a flurry of expletives, is it sinful or just an expression of anger, frustration, embarrassment, and sorrow all rolled into one?

Good question Wip! Scripture does say to be thankful for every situation, so maybe we know we've repented when we hit our thumb and say, "Thank you God!"

So this morning I grabbed the eggs out of the fridge walked to the frying pan, opened the carton and realized it was the wrong bunch of eggs so I go "Shi-ooot!" and return to the fridge, get the egg carton that isn't brand new, and return to the frying pan to make my breakfast. Well while making my eggs I was thinking and thinking about this topic and it occurred to me that even if I said "Oops" I'd have said it for the same reason and meant the same frustration in the word.

So is saying "oops" a swear too?

I think "Oops" is more like recognizing your sins. Its actually a good step in my opinion. The more you tackle at it, the more it goes away. stay focused!!! And may god be with you man.
