America in 1929

This thread can't wait. Sorry for yet another.

So what really happened to America in 1929? I just read again, Thomas Wolfe's "You Can't Go Home Again", the last chapter: 48 - Credo.

And it was George's valediction to Fox.. Somewhere he mentioned:

I think the enemy is blind, but has the
brutal power of his blind grab. I do not think
the enemy was born yesterday, or that he
grew to manhood forty years ago, or that he
suffered sickness and collapse in 1929, or
that we began without the enemy, and that
our vision faltered, that we lost the way, and
suddenly were in his camp.

I had to do a quick google search. Wikipedia listed a lot of political stuff that don't seem to agreeyethb with the tone of what the writer of the novel was talking about. I found this link:

click to read

The impact of the Wall Street Crash:
1) 12 million people out of work
2) 12,000 people being made unemployed
every day
3) 20,000 companies had gone bankrupt
4) 1616 banks had gone bankrupt
5) 1 farmer in 20 evicted
6) 23,000 people committed suicide in one year
- the highest ever

So, I begin to think:
America has never recovered from this? Yet some (both young Americans and non Americas who just migrated to the States )who didn't witness the period today talk about a paradise known as America. What if they had existed before the 1929 problem or what if there was never a problem at all?

Yet under such a fallen state (if fallen at all) America is a glorious heaven compared to most States of the world.
