An American Prayer
By Jason Goldtrap 12.05.06
My sweet, sweet America, dear of all that is right,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Those not within the belly of the beast
Still seek, still dream, still pray for peace.
Though your cities may reel from an atom’s scorch
We’ll yet fly the standard from our front porch.
Stand tall, stand strong, against tyrants fight,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
In desert sands and jungle’s din,
The coiling asp, see not as your friend,
Though aptly endued through demonic lies
They cannot defeat the righteous and wise.
Hear whispers of justice, not babbles of trite,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
From Arlington’s stones comes the cry, “Relent!
Was my sweat in vain? My blood misspent?
Native tongue reviled? Heritage rebuffed?â€Â
Honor their dues. Restore their trust.
Remove the darkness, stain and blight,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Cease not honoring God, your gracious Host.
Let praise, like waves upon the coast,
Thunder on in spite of the folly of man,
Let reason and faith prevail again.
Amen
