and they'll know we are Christians by our--

Probably true. And that's been a frustrating fact for me. But I also know spiritual worship is about the anointing, not the grab the music has on you. The world will never understand this.

The worst Christian music I have heard is where the vocalist is copying the vocal acrobatics of the world. Yuck! If they want to sing like that they need to go on some TV talent contest, not try to sing Christian praise and worship music. That stuff of the world has no place in Christian worship. I detest when people think the praise and worship service was good just because the music was good by outward, worldly standards. They don't get it.

True, but people who think "the world will see we are different if we reject contemporary or modern music" have their focus on the wrong place as well.
Going too far in either direction is focusing too much on outward appearance--"look at me, I'm so holy". "Look at me, I'm so relevant and with the times".

It's not about doing that so the world will see we are different (who cares what the world thinks). It's about doing that knowing that good worship music is not measured by how it rates musically to what the world likes and exalts. IOW, Christian music is not good because it copies the latest cultural sound in music. Good Christian music is good in that it is of good quality, but not so good that it distracts with the world's musical and vocal acrobatics so as to draw worship to the performer and the music and away from God, and has an understandable and anointed message in the words (if there are any).

For some it is and they specifically say so, "how can we make an impact on the world if we play worldly music, we need to be visibly different". The church I grew up in was like that.

Christian music...isn't the best. Maybe its just the sort of music I listened to before Jesus saved me...not to sound snobby, but...I'm not terribly impressed. Often, much of it seems a pale imitation of what's current in the secular arena, as Jethro Bodine pointed out.

In addition...over-use of the Christian music, to entertain, to bring out emotions...I dunno. They did a lot of that when I was at Teen Challenge (Pentecostal, 1 year residential thing). I mean, the TC people were great, and they just get 1 year to correct some seriously wayward people, so I get it, but...over the long haul, I don't know if altar calls fueled by the latest Christian top ten singles will really get results. Then again...what will?

I was going to say earlier that Chris Tomlin and others are proving C. in the OP to be less true than it has been. I like to put this YouTube video on, open up the lyrics in another tab and have a genuine praise and worship session right here at my computer.
I'm not terribly crazy about the hard rock feel, but I have to admit some of these are just plain anointed. They're good musically without being terribly distracting, and the lyrics are truly praise and worship inspiring. I know that Christ Tomlin actually has a quieter, sensitive style in him, and it seems that maybe the recording industry crafted many of his songs to be pop Christians hit. 'Pop' meaning popular, of course. That means adding zap to them to appeal to the masses.

I miss dad plunking out a song on the old piano or guitar mom singing.. maybe all of us singing in the car.. one chores or hymn after another,,,

I took the portion about music in the OP to be more about the sort of teachings I grew up with ("contemporary music is of the devil we cannot have even a shred of it in our church, the Bible says we are supposed to be a PECULIAR people and I'd say not using rock or even contemporary music seems pretty peculiar"), but this is a thing too. There is good and well done, artistic, and meaningful Christian music out there*, but a lot of it comes across as trying too hard and being too repetitive...not as in repetitive lyrics, but the same tropes and cliches getting overused in the music in general. Though, opinions will vary. I actually do like the music that the local Christian radio station airs. That said, there isn't enough variety to be found and what they tend to air DOES seem to be copying trends rather than exploring music and seeing what THEY can do with it.

But hey, our music tends to be better than our attempts to provide good children's programming....I mean, have you SEEN the children's shows that air on TBN?

*My opinion: Relient K, Switchfoot, Disciple, others (though a tad less consistently)...though two out of these three are not at all strictly limited to songs with a Christian message, and Disciple isn't 100% of the time but still most of the time.
