I'm amazed the first festive feature is for marrieds: romance is not dead, folks.. :wink:

What Makes Your Spouse Feel Loved?
Nancy C. Anderson

Valentine’s Day is coming soon, and romance is on our minds. We tend to think we know what it means to express "love" – flowers, candy, cards, jewelry and expensive dinners, right?

That pretty much sums up what most couple do on Valentine’s Day to show love to their mates, so it must be the formula that works.

But what if these standard methods don't speak to your mate's heart? What if your attempts at showing love fall flat?

One day, I asked my husband, Ron, to make a list of things he wished I would do for him: things that would make him feel loved. It was an amazing revelation. I made a wish-list, too, and when we started doing the things on each other's list, our marriage moved from frustrating to fulfilling.

Here's why I asked him to make a list:

One Saturday afternoon, Ron was happily watching a football game, but I was in the mood to be outside. So I spent two hours washing and waxing his new red sedan. It looked wonderful, and I was very proud of myself. I thought, I’m the greatest wife in the world!

When the game was over, I was bubbling with excitement as I said, "I have a wonderful surprise for you. Follow me!" As we walked out to the driveway, I pointed to the car and boasted, "I washed it and waxed it! Isn’t it beautiful?"

His face froze, as he said, "Why did you do that? The windows are all streaked. Besides, I like to go to the car wash."

I planted my hands on my hips and said, "I did something nice for you . . . gave you a gift . . . and you just spit on it! My old boyfriend, Mike, was always thrilled when I washed his car!"

"Well, I’m not Mike, am I? I don’t want you to wash my car. If you want to do something to please me, wash some dirty clothes. The laundry pile is big enough to ski on!"

" That would make you happy?"

"I’d be thrilled! That pile drives me nuts!"

I was shocked. "I had no idea that dirty laundry bothered you. It’s never bothered me."

"Obviously."

That was when I asked him write down a few things I could do to please him. Over the years, we’ve put a positive spin on it by calling it a love list.

When we speak to couples’ groups, we give them a sheet of paper and tell them to write down the top three things they wish their spouse would do for them. You’d be surprised at some of the things on their lists . . . or maybe you wouldn’t...

The man typically includes " more sex," but we rarely see that request on a woman’s list. The woman’s list usually includes "talk to me more," but I’ve never seen that on a man’s list.

The requests most likely to be honored are those that are both specific and doable. For example, "be more romantic" is too vague; that could mean different things to different people.

"Bring me flowers once a month" or "kiss me good-bye every morning" would be more specific.

Also, your request must be doable. Don’t ask you wife to "look like a super model" or "keep the house clean all the time." Instead, you could write, "wear a dress for our date night" or "make the bed in the morning." If your requests are reasonable and realistic, your mate will be more likely to honor them.

One of the things on my list is "wait for me while I’m getting out of the car." In the early years, when we’d arrive at our destination, he’d be inside before I had time to round up my purse, find my keys, check my lipstick, and lock the car.

I explained, "I feel abandoned when you leave me. I want to walk inâ€â€together." Once he knew that was a big deal, he got much better at waiting. His willingness to please me made me want to please him too.

Study your mate as if he or she was a textbook and you are studying for a final exam.

If we make an effort to learn about our mates’ preferences and priorities, they’ll feel understood and appreciated. If we educate ourselves about the various differences between us and our mates, and work on ways to play to each other’s strengths, we’ll build strong hedges around our marriages.

Things to Think About

1. What are the biggest differences between my mate and me?

2. Have I been studying my mate in order to understand  or to change -- him or her?

3. What are some things I wish my spouse understood about me?

Things to Do

1. Make your "I feel loved when you/we ______" list. List at least three specific things. Some examples: have sex twice a week, pray together every morning, compliment me, drive slower, iron my shirts, attend church together, make sure clean towels are in the bathroom, help me give the kids a bath, buy me a small surprise once a month. Remember, there are no right or wrong answers. If it’s important to youâ€â€it’s important!

2. Ask your mate to make his or her list. Then do the number one thing on that list without complaining, defending your past behavior, or saying how stupid it isâ€â€even if it is.

3. Carry your mate’s list with you and, during the next few days, do as many things as possible.

4. Compliment and thank your mate when he or she does something on your list  even if they don’t do it perfectly.

5. Continue to update your lists as new needs arise. Keep doing this until you die.

DISCUSSION:

What makes your spouse feel loved? Do you differ in the ways you express love or did the two of you just "click" early on? Have your ever put energy into the wrong "love language" only to get frustrating (or humorous) results? Post responses here.

Valentine's so Shallow Compared to 'The Deep, Deep Love of Jesus'
Eva Marie Everson

My husband and I had agreed to house two young men. Tony McRae and Donny Limbert were, at that time, seminary students with extraordinary musical gifting. They would be performing at our church for the first of what became many times on Sunday morning of that particular weekend. They arrived in town on Saturday evening. After a sound check at the church, they were driven to our home by our pastor.

Our oldest daughter, Ashley, had gone to bed early after a hard day of play. Our youngest, Jessica, had determined with 3-year-old resolve to stay awake long enough to meet the guys who were taking over her bedroom.

Somewhere around 9:00 our pastor arrived with the singers/ministers in tow. We greeted one another and I asked if they were hungry or thirsty, aware that Jessica had become the shadow of my right leg.

Clad in soft pink and white pajamas, she looked up at the handsome and smiling men. Then, turning quickly, she left the room, blonde curls bouncing on her shoulders. When she returned she had in her tiny hands a book about Jesus. She paused at the living room door long enough to access where everyone was now sitting.

Spotting Tony as being the nearest, she headed to him, book outstretched. Tony greeted her kindly, then watched as she opened her book to a page where a smiling Jesus had been captured in color pencils.

“Jesus,†she said, pointing to the image.

“That’s right,†Tony responded. “And He loves you very, very much.â€Â

Jessica’s blue eyes met his. “I know,†she said.

Fast Forward

Sixteen years later, an angry Jessica ??? who’d we’d recently asked to leave our home ??? was escorted into our living room by her then-boyfriend. Rio (the boyfriend) was, himself, the father of a young daughter.

The turmoil of our family was tangible as he ordered Jessica to sit next to him on the sofa. My husband and I sat in separate chairs across the room, looking at the child we barely recognized as our little girl. She, in turn, stared in disdain at the floor beneath her feet.

“Do you see these two people?†Rio’s question ended the silence.

She gave us an obligatory glance.

“Those two people,†Rio continued, “are the only two people in this world who would die for you. And yet you treat them like you do…â€Â

There Is One More

The words have stayed with me these several years later. The only two people in this world who would die for you.

But I knew in my heart then as I know now, there is One more. One who not only would die for her, but did.

How deep is a love that would so willingly die?

Between the 9 th and 17 th verses of John 15, Jesus uses the word “love†nine times.

“As the Father has loved me,†He said, “I have loved you.â€Â

He said that we are to remain in His love by obeying His commands; that we are to love one another as He has loved us. His command, He said, is simply to love one another.

He also called those who sat in attendance (His disciples) His friends. No one, He said, can love another more than the one who would lay down his life for his friends.

Jesus was speaking in the Upper Room, mere hours from what would be His betrayal, mock trial, and crucifixion. He well knew what He was walking into and even better understood the kind of love it would require.

O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus

In 1926, the year after the death of a London merchant and open air preacher named Samuel Trevor Francis, O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus, and Other Poems, was published by Pickering and Inglis.

In his hymn, Francis wrote: O the deep, deep love of Jesus, love of every love the best!

Francis, in previous stanzas, used the deepest and fullest part of the ocean’s water to metaphorically describe the power and magnitude of the love of Christ. It is immeasurable, he penned. It rolls over us as the waves of the tide and we can feel it underneath us, all around us! It leads us as He watches over us; those for whom He died to call His own.

And nothing… nothing!... can compare to it. It is, as Francis wrote, “the heaven of heavens.â€Â

Have You Felt This Love?

My daughter’s stray from such love was brief. From start to finish, it lasted about two years. In a recent interview for Coral Ridge Ministries (Dr. D. James Kennedy), she said, “I had a moment where I felt close to God again and I opened up that door again and made a decision… I didn’t want anything to keep me away from that.â€Â

What drew her back to the Lord? That same love she’s been told about as a little girl by a young minister of the Gospel. The love that had willingly nailed itself to a cross on a hill called Golgatha over two thousand years ago.

The love that was so strong, so incredibly strong, it burst through the gates of hell and death, resurrected itself and continues to live in the hearts and souls of those He calls His friends. His brothers and sisters. His bride.

Especially this time of year ??? as florists prepare fragrant bouquets, and greeting card companies thrill to the increase in sales, as romantic restaurants polish their silver and wipe down their crystal, and as young men and women plot and plan some special moment of love ??? many others feel lonely, forgotten, unloved, and unlovable.

Well, that’s just not so. If that is you, allow me to speak to your heart: there is One who loves you more than you can imagine. His is a love that draws you ( Song of Solomon 1:4) as it washes over you.

His is, as Francis wrote, a love of every love, the best!

Eva Marie and Jessica Everson’s story can be read in their books, Sex, Lies, and the Mediaand Sex, Lies, and High School(Cook/Life Journey). Now sought after speakers, they share their testimony to audiences of parents, grandparents, and youth workers while educating about the dangers of media to our youth culture.

Christian Law Firm Promoting Stand for Purity in Public Schools

For the fourth straight year, Liberty Counsel is helping public school students take a stand for purity this Valentine's Day.

AgapePress reports that the "Day of Purity" is designed to help those students educate their peers on the value of remaining sexually pure -- one benefit being the avoidance of contracting a sexually-transmitted disease.

For the annual "Day of Purity," Liberty Counsel provides flyers, shirts, and wristbands students can take to their public schools. The project began in response to the promotion of sexually charged movies, television shows, and music produced by the entertainment industry.

Liberty Counsel founder Mat Staver says the Day of Purity gives Christian students a chance to counter pop-culture messages that exalt promiscuous sexual behavior and attempt to convince teens that they should give up traditional values and explore their sexuality early and often.

But as Staver points out, there is a devastating price for those who choose to go down that path.

Song of Solomon 4

Lover

1 How beautiful you are, my darling!
Oh, how beautiful!
Your eyes behind your veil are doves.
Your hair is like a flock of goats
descending from Mount Gilead.
2 Your teeth are like a flock of sheep just shorn,
coming up from the washing.
Each has its twin;
not one of them is alone.

3 Your lips are like a scarlet ribbon;
your mouth is lovely.
Your temples behind your veil
are like the halves of a pomegranate.

4 Your neck is like the tower of David,
built with elegance [a] ;
on it hang a thousand shields,
all of them shields of warriors.

5 Your two breasts are like two fawns,
like twin fawns of a gazelle
that browse among the lilies.

6 Until the day breaks
and the shadows flee,
I will go to the mountain of myrrh
and to the hill of incense.

7 All beautiful you are, my darling;
there is no flaw in you.

8 Come with me from Lebanon, my bride,
come with me from Lebanon.
Descend from the crest of Amana,
from the top of Senir, the summit of Hermon,
from the lions' dens
and the mountain haunts of the leopards.

9 You have stolen my heart, my sister, my bride;
you have stolen my heart
with one glance of your eyes,
with one jewel of your necklace.

10 How delightful is your love, my sister, my bride!
How much more pleasing is your love than wine,
and the fragrance of your perfume than any spice!

11 Your lips drop sweetness as the honeycomb, my bride;
milk and honey are under your tongue.
The fragrance of your garments is like that of Lebanon.

12 You are a garden locked up, my sister, my bride;
you are a spring enclosed, a sealed fountain.

13 Your plants are an orchard of pomegranates
with choice fruits,
with henna and nard,

14 nard and saffron,
calamus and cinnamon,
with every kind of incense tree,
with myrrh and aloes
and all the finest spices.

15 You are a garden fountain,
a well of flowing water
streaming down from Lebanon.

Beloved

16 Awake, north wind,
and come, south wind!
Blow on my garden,
that its fragrance may spread abroad.
Let my lover come into his garden
and taste its choice fruits.

Footnotes:

Song of Solomon 4:4 The meaning of the Hebrew for this word is uncertain.

Song of Solomon 8

1 If only you were to me like a brother,
who was nursed at my mother's breasts!
Then, if I found you outside,
I would kiss you,
and no one would despise me.

2 I would lead you
and bring you to my mother's houseâ€â€
she who has taught me.
I would give you spiced wine to drink,
the nectar of my pomegranates.

3 His left arm is under my head
and his right arm embraces me.

4 Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you:
Do not arouse or awaken love
until it so desires.

Friends

5 Who is this coming up from the desert
leaning on her lover?

Beloved

Under the apple tree I roused you;
there your mother conceived you,
there she who was in labor gave you birth.

6 Place me like a seal over your heart,
like a seal on your arm;
for love is as strong as death,
its jealousy [a] unyielding as the grave.
It burns like blazing fire,
like a mighty flame. [c]

7 Many waters cannot quench love;
rivers cannot wash it away.
If one were to give
all the wealth of his house for love,
it [d] would be utterly scorned.

Friends

8 We have a young sister,
and her breasts are not yet grown.
What shall we do for our sister
for the day she is spoken for?

9 If she is a wall,
we will build towers of silver on her.
If she is a door,
we will enclose her with panels of cedar.

Beloved

10 I am a wall,
and my breasts are like towers.
Thus I have become in his eyes
like one bringing contentment.

11 Solomon had a vineyard in Baal Hamon;
he let out his vineyard to tenants.
Each was to bring for its fruit
a thousand shekels [e] of silver.

12 But my own vineyard is mine to give;
the thousand shekels are for you, O Solomon,
and two hundred [f] are for those who tend its fruit.

Lover

13 You who dwell in the gardens
with friends in attendance,
let me hear your voice!

Beloved

14 Come away, my lover,
and be like a gazelle
or like a young stag
on the spice-laden mountains.
