Ethologists are beginning to discover that many animals have some concept of fairness. I don't know at what point in nature, personhood happens. But I would not harm an ape without very good reason.

On the other hand, I regret having to put out mousetraps, so maybe I'm not the person to ask. Scientist vary a lot in this regard; some questioning even human consciousness, and others thinking it occurs in at least some other animals.
