Just yesterday, I was on a 3 lane road, 2 lanes turn left, the other goes straight. I am in the middle lane (the one that still has to go left)

the light turns green, and I turn, and am staying in my lane (as those dotted lines show) and pul into the far right lane. The lady next to me however (to the left of me) begins to pull into my lane. I Swerve into the gutter and the grass a little, and beep my horn really loudly. She swerves to the left, back into her lane, and almost into oncoming traffic. She then, Rolls down the window (with cellphone attached to right ear) and begins swearing at me for trying to cut into her lane.

Maybe this incident was just with a driver that well, doesn't know how to drive, But it has been my experience that people on cell phones, tend to be worse off driving than normal (I hang up my phone, or pull over when I get calls driving)

Dialing numbers or checking Vmail takes your eyes/attention from the road. During those times one drives by assumption.
On another note I miss the big knobs and radio dials of cars from yester-year. You didn't have to take your eyes off the road to find little push buttons to adjust the radio or stereo. I also miss the headlight dimmer being on the floor. Going around a curve at night it's a good idea to have both hands on the wheel and that's usually where you first realize there's another car coming toward you. Even though you may still have your left thumb on the wheel it's just not as good as dimming lights with your left foot with both hands firmly where they belong. I miss that a lot.

Saw an SUV the other day playing movies with a DVD setup built into the vehicle. More and more of our attention is drawn from the road by more and more added features... usually entertainment.

I wonder why you're not supposed to be doing these things taking a driver's test. Maybe it's because one is supposed to be paying attention or something. Dunno. Just a thought.

It depends on how much emphasis you put on the conversation when compared to the road in front of you. If you're paying attention to where you're going and need to have a lot of the conversation repeated to you then your driving hasn't suffered. If you're putting more empphasis on chatting with whoever than driving then it has suffered as a result.

It is dangerous to use a cellphone while driving, because unlike talking to a passenger, the person on the other end can't watch the road with the driver, and the driver's attention is already divided enough.

My husband and I have close calls every day because of people chatting on the phone while they are driving. It should be made illegal except for life or death emergencies. Whatever you want to chat about can wait until you are finished driving.

I think most people will admit cellphone use while driving isn't exactly a no-risk adventure. Yet, a lot of people are willing to take that risk for a little convenience. Problem is, the safety compromised isn't always their own.

I've found there are enough people who have enough trouble driving without the distraction of a cell phone. They're out for blood on the drunk drivers, why not go after the cell phone users too. Maybe our taxes will go down then.

Quite often I have to put my cell phone down, while I am driving so that I don't create a possibility of an accident.
I havn't had very many dangerous situations because of cell phone drivers, but then I also live where there is no such thing as stop and go traffic. Rush hour is when there is 2 minutes between a vehicle. (Thats exagerated a bit, but not a whole lot)

There have been times when I've been afraid to call 911 while driving because I don't know what they would say about it. If you make using a cell phone illegal while driving, less people will report problems to police.

If you make cell phone driving illegal, you should make listening to the radio illegal because people flip through the stations. You should make eating and drinking illegal and shut down all the drive throughs. You should make putting on make-up illegal and talking to other people in the car illegal because that is distracted driving.

Just last week I was being tailed by someone not operating a cell phone and a car pulled out of a parking lot in front of me and none of us were operating a cell phone and none of us got into an accident. People do not use their turn signals and police routinely do nothing about people exceeding the speed limit on various roads. It is funny but I can put my turn signal on the highway and no one will let me merge in traffic because they are all speeding anyway. I also went to New York and found out that you either speed on this one highway or you get rear-ended because everyone is flying.

Its actually when people are not using a cell phone that they are more likely to drive faster than operating a cell phone. I find that people actually slow down when they are driving with a cell phone. It is when people have time to think without operating a cell phone that they are more dangerous because they enter my buffer or safe zone because they think that they have inches to pull in front of me and use my safety zone for their personal turning and use. I try to keep a following distance between me and other cars but people keep pulling into my following distance making it more dangerous when they are not operating a cell phone.

Well Sothenes, so far most legislation concerning this issue has not been passed into law. I believe it's fairly safe to say cellphone use while driving will be something people will just have to deal with.

Against the law in NY, and When i went to court of my speeding ticekt, of the 50 odd peopel there, 10 were speeding, 30+were cell phones, and the other 6 or so were weird ones....

Believe me, I have had my fair share of drivers NOT on cell phones, almsot kill me.

Idunno about other peoples cars, But, I don't have a fancy stereo or anything, so i can easily change the stations etc (to my preset 3 i listen to) and volume control isn't difficult at all. There is a diffrence between a 2-3 second distraction of changing a station, and a 10 minute distraction of talking on the phone.
As for eating, Can you usually eat with out actually paying attention to eating itself? I can eat and do tons of other things at the same time (the only thing I eat while driving is fruit)

I think the reason cell phone talk is worse than passenger talk, is because with a cell, you are often using 1 hand to drive, and you are also having to try harder to pay attention and hear them. (My cell phone stinks so......)

I still miss knobs.
Got a new job recently and there are no handles anywhere in the restrooms. All is automatic... faucets, flush and even the papertowel dispenser is motion (proximity) sensitive. Sometimes it's nice to wet a comb without getting your hands wet.
I dunno. There's just something about having all your thinkng done for you. I used to be able to wax my car with the doors open (speakers were in the doors) without the incessant "ding-ding-ding", being able to turn off the wipers when a streak is at it's minimum, blinking my taillights as a thank you when a semi flashes his lights out of habit for other truckers (I can't turn off my headlights during the day... not a very energy saving feature) and can't turn off any lights at night, headlights or taillights, when the engine is running. The dome light stays on for a while when I first get into the car without starting it, There's air blowing in my face unless I press the "inside air recirculation" option (hot if I used the heater before) and can't even turn the engine over for any reason unless I'm in the seat and with the clutch to the floor.
Maybe I'm just old school but I do like to turn things on and off when I want to.

Is it illegal in some states to use your cell phone while driving? I know it's not here...

Yep, It is illegal in NY to drive on a cell phone. I think a few of the other northern states also impose such legislation :)

Think of all those MADD moms who think drunk drivers should be locked up for life on the first offense. I bet most of them love to gab on their cell phones in the car. I also bet news of the danger of phoning and driving being worse than drinking and driving doesn't phase them.

I'm reminded of that dope fiend, Rush Limbaugh, who use to insist (and may still insist) that illegal drug users should go to jail. He was recently arrested at an airport for illegal possession of a recreational drug (Viagra, without a valid prescription). I think of those who smoked pot in college, but think that others who smoke pot should go to jail. At least smoking pot in the dorm room doesn't get anyone killed on the road.
