A study comparing the original Kenyan chameleons with the Hawaiian populations found the island dwellers were 30% brighter than their African counterparts.

Over time, evolution tends to increase fitness of populations. It's not surprising that they would evolve to better fit the new environment. Ages ago, a few fruit flies made it to Hawaii. Because they had no competition, and lots of open niches, they underwent rapid evolution into a large number of species. A major portion of the world's fruit fly species live in the Hawaiian Islands, now.
