....about the drought conditons in America. The last statistics I read was that over 50% of American farm land was under drought. This does not auger well for any body. People here in the Caribbean import a sizeable portion of their foodstuffs from America. These include:-
Corn oil
Cereal
Flour
Feed for animals and chickens.
Meat
I guess we can eat our own local fruits. There are local farmers who produce meat and chicken but I believe this situation is going to have a rippling effect across the world.
People here have been urged for many years to eat local and I am sure by the end of the year foodstuff will be more expensive.

The thing is, no one can make the rain fall. It is interesting that the bible prophesies about famine, and when there is lack of food, disease tend to come in its path.

The interesting this is that the media in the USA and in the Caribbean seems not to be highlighting this situation. I guess people are so caught up in other things, that they are not very concerned. Later in the year when the price of food drastically increase then they will see what is really happening. Only time will tell how long this drought will last, and how serious will be the economic effects.

Incorrect. Man can make the rain fall and has made it an industry since the 60's. We are capable of using either electronic or chemical means to do so.

It isn't so much that it's dry here. People are concerned about the prices going up because of the drought. There are lots of farms here and most of them don't make much $$ and struggle to get by. When cost goes up it makes things harder. We have horses ourselves, and I'm very glad we can feed them on our pastures.

Sounds like you guys are in a sense in an ideal, rural setting (from a city slicker perspective...), but really I'm sure that it can be tough when commodities rise in price and bills go up, and so forth.

Probably people eating local is better for them as it would not be processed food (but the government constantly cracks down on a lot of stuff like that but that's another conspiracy theory for another day). Frankly, the foods you have listed there are not good and totally junk for one anyway except meat, and that's a big IF the cattle is fed properly. Better yet, local meat (grass fed if possible), diary, eggs, butter, some fruit and especially raw vegetables are good for a person. I can care less about "cattle feed food" dished out to the population in the name of health other than the unfortunate fact that it may make good food prices sky-rocket as well.

We (my family) try to live off the land as much as possible so that when prices go up (as they always do) we won't be dependent on anyone but ourselves. It is amazing how much food you can grow in the garden. It sure helps the wallet.

Hannah, Well, sounds very sensible to be as self-sufficient as possible, I would say.

Kind of makes people generally more aware of the Creator, and the seasons of the year, too, I reckon.

What I'm saying is that if a drought is what it takes to get people to eat locally and better, it's sort of a blessing in disguise. But the other point I briefly made is that it might be more easily said than done since even then "farmer's kid" is carefully watched and regulated. They rather we'd eat from that list above.

I think a lot of our crazy weather is definitely solar related. Just look at all the x-class CME's all the time and sunspot activity as you pointed out. I've noticed an increase in all this in recent history.

On a similar subject line, I think our so-called global warming is a solar trend as well. After all, other planets are doing the same thing --- without the big polluting cars and industry that we are so often told is the cause.
