Are restaurants allowed to "starve" people who work there?

i worked at this resturant for about about a month and i just quit. not that the job was hard but the "policies" were such stuipid BS and its because i have hypglycemia where if i dont eat for a few hours my blood sugar level gets very low and i get headaches and feel sick. i told some ppl and every once in a while one of the servers leave me some wings or something that someone didnt want and would have otherwise been thrown away. i was already told that your not given a free meal but you have to buy everything that you want to eat (50% off at least), even if your feeling sick. one day i didnt have enough cash cuz i got gas and i asked if i could makybe just for that day have something to eat. then they said they would but wound up making me wait a whole 7 hours which i thought, whats the point? and then they wanted me to take something off the kids menu. THE KIDS MENU. are they kidding? i finally put my foot down and said i wanted a regular burger with fries, and then the idiot manager nastily told me that "this doesnt happen everyday". jerks! then the worst happened, some server left me a coup,e wings cuz i was hungry and i went in the back to nibble a bit and the manager sees me and they then pulled me aside and said you couldnt eat food without buying it. i said someone gave it to me, i wasnt stealing and it would have been thrown out anyway. they didnt care at all, just wrote me a write up and i have to talk to the head manager to see if i can come back. i quit cuz i cant work somewhere that cruel. i mean its basicallt cruelty right? are places allowed to be this cruel? i felt like oliver twist asking for more. are they allowed to do this to hard working employees? im so pissed at these ppl. one place i used to work at gave me a free meal every night, but these big "corporate" places are the rudest and cruelest places to work. is this fair? i wish there was more i could do to sue there asses and making me starve practially.

Think about it this way, Peter, if you didn't work in a restaurant, what would you do then? Demand that your boss go out and buy you food to eat? In essense, this is exactly what you were demanding your boss to do. My hubby is hypoglycemic. He simply packs food and snacks to have on hand so if his blood sugar drops, he can have a quick snack and be OK.

As far as the restaurant is concerned, each has the right to make it's own policy. I've worked at several in my time, and the policies between restaurants ranged from providing 1 free meal per any work shift longer than 5 hours to absolutly no free food at all. Depending upon the restaurants overhead, benefits etc. giving away free food to all employees can make or break the profit. Even with the "large corporations" the owner owns his franchise and has to pay for everything.

handy's right. But I also know what it's like to be standing at work and get all shaky and sick from hypoglycemia. Bringing your own snacks would definitely be the way to go. And think about if you worked at a retail store or something. Would it be the store's responsibility to give you merchandise? Getting half price is pretty good!

I only get 25% off and I AM the manager..

;) Just be honest, respectful, and stand your ground. Let them know what's up and if they don't understand you HAVE to have a snack every once in a while then they're too stupid to be in management. And I agree with Jojo. Bring your own snacks and let management and other employees know that you must eat them.

What they said...bring your own snacks, eat on breaks, and don't burn bridges.

Have you ever prayed about this condition ? .... :pray
Sounds pretty serious to me . I'd say we should all pray for you and you should be healed and you will reach a point in life where you won't have to eat every few hours anymore, your blood sugar will never get low, you have no more giddy spells and no more hypglycemia !!

:amen

Pray. Otherwise the suggestion of bringing your own snacks to have on break would likley remedy the issue.
