Does anyone here know a good way to get rid of grasshoppers? We are being invaded by them again! My hollyhock is pretty much gone, my garden is getting destroyed and they totally ate every blossom on my clematis.

I tried some stuff I got from the Dept. of Ag. and it does kill them ...eventually. Meanwhile, since it takes a while to kill them, they just keep eating and eating. I haven't had much luck talking with local nurseries.

Does anyone out there have any good ways to destroy the pests?

Are they just plain little old grasshoppers or the big ones? Down south we call them Lubbers.

I get a jar or can with an inch or two of gasolene in it. Brush the bugs off the shrubbery into the container and...put a lid on it. Either that or step on them and man...what a mess. Odd thing about the Lubbers. Ants don't eat the smashed remains. :confused

put up some bird houses. Martin houses and various ones with different hole sizes, that will determine the species of bird that will live there. Birds will help control them, but then you'll have bird poop everywhere. :P

:rolling :biglol

We only have a few grasshoppers, but we are inundated with June bugs! It's not June anymore, bugs, get the hint. :rollingpin

hmmmm, sound's like the Martin's are just as much of a mess as the chickens were. We used to have chickens and they ate the grasshoppers. Unfortunately, they also ate the flowers and veggies too.

As far as killing them by hand, we do, but it's comparable to emptying the ocean with a teaspoon. There are thousands of them out there. Just walking from my back porch to the dog kennels causes a cloud of hundreds to fly up.

Kind of freaky, really. :eek2

Try to populate the area with lizards native to your area. Most lizards eat the hoppers. :-)

You know, now that you bring it up, Vic, I might have some insight as to why we are being overran with grasshoppers and that is we just haven't seen all that many lizards and snakes this summer. Normally we see quite a few lizards and bull snakes (the smaller one's eat insects as well), but not this summer. I'm not sure why.

It's breaking my heart out there though. My garden is just being out right killed. Most of my zucchini plants are gone and only one melon has survived. So far. My sunflowers are gone and so are the peas, and so many of the flowers. The flowers will most likely return next spring, but boy I'm glad I'm not completely reliant on that garden to eat. The tomatoes are doing OK, they don't seem to like the tomatoes. I see them on the plants, but they don't seem to eat them.

In the meantime, you may need to net your garden. It's a hassle, but it may save the crops.

Yes, I've asked my husband to get some. Believe it or not, this plague just started about a week ago. So much damage in so little time. :shame

You know, we really need to start a Gardening Talk & Advice Sticky. :yes I got lots of questions. :help Well maybe not lots... but a few. :D

(replace duck with grasshopper)

"Duck Season."
"Rabbit Season."
"Duck Season."
"Rabbit Season."
"Rabbit Season."
"Duck Season. Fire!"

:lol Damage to my garden notwithstanding, watching the cats go after grasshoppers is pretty funny. They kind of hop after them. Or they stalk and then when the grasshopper jumps up, they jump straight in the air.
