Christianity Today March 15,
The new movie Mary Magdalene, which is out across UK cinemas tomorrow, is already making waves. Christian Today has reviewed the film here and interviewed Joaquin Phoenix, who plays a uniquely vulnerable, human and burdened Jesus, here.

The beautifully shot film, written by Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett, looks at the human relationship with God through the eyes of Mary, who is rehabilitated from her mythical status as a prostitute into a pious and earnest seeker of truth by the acclaimed actress Rooney Mara. She is placed at the heart of the Jesus story, having left her family to follow 'the healer' and ending up as a key disciple. http://www.christiantoday.com/artic...re.are.8.other.top.religious.films/127460.htm

I can't say I ever imagined Juaquine Phoenix playing Jesus.

I hope they didn't do anything dumb in the movie (as Hollywood often does) such as marrying off Mary Magdalene to Jesus.

Mary Magdalene wasn't a prostitute nor is she called that in the Bible.

I like Joaquin Phoenix movies. Though I can't say I ever imagined him playing the savior. At least the women of the Bible are getting movies made about them now. It's about time.

If you've not seen.........."The Man Who Invented Christmas", then you should put this on your Redbox list..

Another is, "Goodbye Christopher Robin"

I would also suggest........" The Letters"

and ..................... "The Book Thief"..

Did I hear something about an "Esther" movie? That would be great too.
There are two trailers at You Tube .
One is a year old and the other is four years.

This one is on DVD now.
There are a lot of Bible movies if you let this set to auto play. Even one in full on the Book of Ruth.

This is the Purflix production. It's not that well acted in the trailer. It's the one that's four years old at You Tube.

With the very minimal amount known of Mary Magdalene in the scriptures I find it amazing how anyone could make a entire movie out of it being anything biblical. Its just adding to the Scriptures.

I don't even know for sure if Mary of Bethany (sister of Martha, brother of Lazarus) is the same woman as Mary Magdalene -- after all -- Bethany is Bethany and Magdal is Magdala...

Is this the Mary of THE ALABASTER JAR who annointed the feet of Jesus?

Is this the Mary out of whom went seven devils?

kiwidan is right to have us leery of these movies, yet I thank God that Christ is preached -- even out of contention

Did you watch the trailer? Some of the dialog in the script is from the bible.
They could be drawing on the Apocrypha to flesh out the characters more too.

Mary was a very common name.

The women's role with Christ is long overdue in being portrayed by big screen productions or small.

That a woman was the first to witness the risen Christ, so in reality makes her the first Christian as she was first to witness and first to preach the risen Christ, first to the disciples.

I listened to a song "I can only imagine" a few years ago. I never knew the story behind its writing which has been made into a movie now...

P.s. I didn't know Dennis Quaid sang...

Jesus is playing Luke? Awesome. He's said to have a hard time, Jim Caviezel, getting roles in Hollywood since he played Christ in, The Passion of the Christ.
Looks like a great film. Looking forward to it.
