It’s a beautiful day with blue skies, green grass, tulips and wonderful white blossoms from the weeping cherry trees with the bumble bees buzzing from flower to flower while the other hard woods are just sprouting their buds for the new season and the fragrance of the lilacs are eagerly anticipated as I can almost smell them now just thinking about them.
This is going to be my year for many firsts, including a full marathon and hopefully many new PR’s especially in my 5k. But my most exciting first happened today, and it’s something that I’ve been dreaming about for the past month. Yes, even the night before last I woke up with a smile on my face as I ran barefoot both gracefully and effortlessly through the lush green grass of a wide open field. The wind was flowing through my hair as smooth as satin sheets and I could taste the sweetness of the air as it rushed through my lungs invigorating my heart, invigorating my soul and somehow, I could since that I was one with my surroundings almost flowing as if united with something bigger than myself. Truly, I was one with the ground, one with the foliage around me, one with the air that I breathed, and one with my creator.
What a joy it was to change into my running garb for a long anticipated run on such a beautiful day when shortly after I started running, I spotted nice green grass along the sidewalk. At first, I thought that I’d swing by the park and do some barefoot speed work, but when I saw that grass, and I knew it would last a mile, well… I couldn’t resist and off came the shoes.
It was wonderful! Absolutely fantastic and everything I had read about being in touch with the ground while running barefoot was true. Now, I’m mostly a midfoot runner and it’s taken me some time to “get itâ€, so when I’d hit a driveway I figured out really quick that I was going to seriously have to make some adjustments in my running form. About three quarters of a mile up, I decided to hit the sidewalk permanently and hone this new running form in and before I knew it, I was almost two miles into my run and loving every step, even though I had left the sweetness of the lush and soft green grass a half mile back.
I had read many places to ease into barefoot running and when you felt any pain stop immediately. About two miles into the run I felt some discomfort and to be wise, I stopped immediately, stretched, and ran my remaining two and a half miles with shoes on. My calves are a little tight and I’m wondering how they will feel tomorrow, but for today, … Today was a fabulous day to run and my first since I was a lad to run barefoot.
