Neat. Are you "just" a spectator or do you do reenactment?
I used to "fight" with some people who did reenactment a while back, but I never took part in the actual reenactment.

Those guys use real weapons and are highly trained athletes. You could easily get killed doing that stuff. I think you're talking about the Society for Creative Anachronisms, who wear real armor, but fight with rattan swords. (fighters are on their honor to fall down when fairly hit).

Supposedly, two state organizations of the Society hold a great battle every year, to decide the ownership of Cleveland. The loser gets Cleveland for a year.

When my kids were younger, we were active in a medieval group that later on joined up with the SCA. It was great fun ... good reason to dress up or down, depending upon one's character. My son was received his fighting sword - a Spanish sword - for his 13th birthday. Weapon practice was with heavily padded PVC pipes ... even those can cause harm.

Ah :)
Well, the reason why I put fight in quotes was that when we were training we often fought without armour,
so the rule was "never hit any harder than needed to let the person feel you touched them" and there were also strict rules about where you could hit , slash and stab. And all weapons were blunt, but not padded. I know there are others that do it more... heavy duty though :p

Worst thing that happened was a guy chipped his tooth when falling down on top of his own weapon :p
