Being Unorthodox

Jesus had an unorthodox message for his time, didn’t he?:

From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." Matthew 4:17 RSV

My understanding is that the religious leaders didn’t like Jesus and had him killed.

I would say his message is still unorthodox. When I share it with Christians, I tend to get a negative reaction.

So let me ask you: Are you unorthodox, or do you automatically agree with what your religious leaders tell you?

Dear Elijah, All orthodox means is right belief, true worship, true glory of God, correct gospel, and so on. So Jesus is in no way unorthodox. But He preached against the error of the Pharisees, actually, I stand corrected, not against the Pharisees and Sadducees themselves, but against their hypocrisy. In Erie PA Scott Harrington

Maybe its coz you are twisting the message.

So let me ask you, are you conveying the simple Gospel message of Justification by Grace through faith ALONE or are you trying to preach another Gospel of salvation involving Mosaic Law? If the latter then you should expect a negative reaction and can consider yourself unorthodox.

Dear Stranglove, According to Saint James, not according to the Mosaic law, justification comes "not by faith alone" (James 2:24). That is the NT. Luther wanted to REMOVE Saint James from the NT! Go figure. Because James 2:24 contradicted MARTIN LUTHER'S NEW VERSION OF ROMANS 3:28, in which LUTHER INSERTED THE NON-BIBLCAL WORD "ALONE" INTO THE TEXT OF ROMANS 3:28. We are justified "by faith" but not by "faith alone". The alone is not in the GREEK NT.

You see, your fundamental misunderstanding of James 2:24 can be cleared up by looking at the verse in context.

Faith without works is dead faith. If your faith does not NATURALLY PRODUCE good fruit then it is not true faith. This is the message that James is trying to get across. Of course, legalists and denominations that have been similarly JUDAIZED like the EO and RC churches use this as a proof text to justify their strange ungodly rituals which they feel justifies them or gives them ADDED sanctification in God's eyes

But by all means start a thread on 'Justification by Faith AND WORKS' and we can study this issue in depth.

My understanding or “orthodox†is: conforming to established doctrine especially in religion, conventional. (Merriam Webster’s online dictionary)

The Lord led me to repent of sins I was committing back in the 1980s. When I repented, my life became indescribably beautiful.

So you can understand why the Lord’s message, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand,†seems right on track, from my point of view.

There is no need to make it complicated. It is very simple: Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Repent.

Ah you see...I think I know why your getting flack off Christians for your message.

Christians ARE repenting from their sins. Why do they need you to tell them that?

You need to be telling NON-believers to read the Gospels and repent.

I would say some do and some don’t.

It’s like the parable about the wheat and chaff. They are both allowed to grow up side by side, but at the end of the growing season, the wheat is harvested and the chaff is burned.

Actually, Strangelove, I thought you thrived on unorthodoxy.

There are people who call themselves Christians who are unchaste or prideful, I believe.

Theres axe murderers that call themselves Christians. Ok, they would consider your calls to repent to be unorthodox..but who on these forums has said that?

Are you sure this isn't about the Mosaic Law? I've seen you pushing elements of it before, is that why you feel people have been rejecting you?

The Lord led me to repent of unchastity, tobacco use, alcohol use, and a few other things. When I obeyed, my life was transformed into an indesribably beautiful thing. I would direct you to this:

But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it upon their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Jer 31:33 RSV

Ok thats cool so, again, who has been giving you a hard time and saying your unorthodox for saying these things?

I’ve frequently brought this up on this website and one other that I belong to. People seem to believe that they are saved and repentance isn’t terribly important, or at least, that is my impression.
