Best horror/chiller - & why??

I believe that Halloween (the first movie) is the best...here's why

1) It epitomizes what every childhood fear sees as the boogeyman: a silent, unknown, ominous, heavy breathing killer.

2) It captures the essence of and personifies in Michael Myers what Halloween night is about: creepiness, stalking in the night, silence in the darkness, fear of the unknown there-and-gone again visuals like ghosts...and the heavy breathing.

3) John Carpenter's main piano score (He did make it himself) is the best and again makes it creepy

4) The killer is not over the top, not revealing, creepy..and breaths heavy

5) The gore is compltely toned down to allow the essence of the terror and fear manifested through MM in the setting of Halloween to take centerstage instead of relying on the 'splatter' effect to get a reaction

It's just the best terror flick ever and it is a shame that the myriads of sequels spoiled the experience for everyone who judges the first movie based on the last 4 sequels.

I've got to agree with you guibox, the original Halloween is the king of all slasher flicks. I have to put The Shining up there on this list for different reasons. Jack Nicholson is great in this but what I like most is the mood that Stanley Kubrick creates... isolation, desolation, and just that eerie creepiness that something is about to happen. A few more close frontrunners would be The Exorcist, Flatliners, Frailty and The Ring, and the Exorcist III.

I left Silence of the Lambs, American Psycho, and Rosemary's Baby off this list because I don't consider them horror... but they are definitely great movies.

I have never understood why the shining is supposed to be so great. I was honestly bored with it. Maybe because it was kubrick. I am not a huge fan, the only movie of his that I do like is full metal jacket.

I'm kind of partial to zombie movies. There have been some good ones out lately. Dawn of the dead, 28 days.

While not falling into the typical slasher genre, I have to say that the original Psycho is my all time favorite.
Well written, well directed, and well acted.
Yes, it is quite dated now. Still, Tony Perkins gives the right amount of angst and sorrow to keep you interested all the way to the conclusion.

If you like Psycho, you might enjoy "Vacancy."

Re: Best horror/chiller - Wait Until Dark

Audry Hepburn and Alan Arkin 1967.

Story
Susie's husband is asked to hold a doll for a woman as they get off an airplane. She disappears. Mike and Carlino are small time hoods who find the woman's body in Susie's apartment, placed there by her partner, Harry Rote. Susie's blindness is the key to them searching the apartment for the doll that contains smuggled drugs. Mike pretends to be an old friend of Susie's husband while her husband is away and together the crooks invent a story of a police investigation of her husband that only the discovery of the now missing doll can save him from. Rote is a killer, and his stalking of Susie becomes more and more obvious as the story unfolds, leaving us with the question, how does a blind woman defend herself.

Each time she seems to get away, but doesn't the suspense mounts. And when the "dead" killer makes his attempt to kill her.. Oh but that would be telling! See it if you can!

Just on a hunch, I looked up "Wait Until Dark" on you tube. It's there and I think all of it is there, though the picture is so dark its hard to see. But you can kind of get the idea.

Another vote for The Shining. Psycho is a great movie, but I don't find it particularly frightening. Suspensful yes, frightening. Not near as scary as The Shining. Another great scary movie, one that I always picture when I think of truly scary movies is another one of King's; Salem's Lot. Salem's Lot is, to my mind, one of the best vampire flicks out there.

Oh, and for a good 'chiller', it's an old movie, but it's truly one of the most suspensful chillers ever! "Duel" by Steven Speilburg and stars Dennis Weaver. Great movie and chilling because you just never quite understand exactly why what is happening is happening.

Agreed!!! That movie drove me crazy! When is he ever going to escape? I think this was Speilburg's first movie too. Does anyone know?

Interesting goof. When Mann's car starts acting up you can see someone (Spielberg himself per various sources) in the backseat of his car in the rear-view mirror.

As usual, after posting I thought of something else, so I checked out you tube and there are scenes from the movie there. I haven't yet found "Spielberg in the mirror." but I did cross-reference a great article at

http://www.tenfourmagazine.com/feature/2004/5.html

which talks about the truck in the movie and says that the idea for the movie was based on a real-life event.

From the article:

Not technically Steven Spielberg’s film debut, Duel began as a TV-Movie, but was later expanded for theatrical release outside the United States when Universal Studios saw its box-office potential. The original story was written about a real-life situation that happened to author Richard Matheson. As the story was told, Richard and a friend were crossing the desert in 1963, when, for no apparent reason at all, a trucker began harassing them on the road. At one point, the situation got so heated that the two men had to swerve off the road into the dirt to avoid a collision with the truck. No one was hurt, but it scared the two guys half to death.

The rest of the article is about the truck(s) that were in the movie. Kind of interesting.

Didn't know about the "Spielberg in the mirror" story. Fun, if true!

I wonder if Duel is released on DVD. It should be, it really is a great scary movie!

(I always hate it when the truck slams into the old woman's snakes though. I like snakes! :sad )

It's not a movie, but a TV show.

It's called "SUPERNATURAL" and it airs on The CW in the United States.

It's the best 'cause it has drama, action, horror, and comedy all mixed into it.

It stars Jensen Ackles (from the horror movie "DeVour" and the 4th season of "Smallville") and Jared Padalecki (from the horror movie "Cry_Wolf" and the TV series "Gilmore Girls").

I seen an episode the other day, it was pretty neat.

Anyone think it might just be the Eurovision Song Contest Final @ 8pm? :infinity:

(Apart from you, Sir Terry)

John Carpenters' "The Thing" The 80's remake, not the very first one

The Others/starring Nicole Kidman
That is the only film i find genuinly scary (and i'm totally in to horror films so i've watched a lot)
