Here’s another way to look at sections of the Bible (for what it's worth):
1. Genesis 1:1-2:3 The genealogy of the heavens and the earth
2. Genesis 2:4 - 11:9 The story of mankind
3. Genesis 11:10 - 32 The genealogy of Shem and Terah
4. Genesis12 - 50 The story of Abraham and the people called Israel
5. Exodus 1:1 - 7 The Children of Israel and their increase
6. Exodus 1:8 through Joshua: The exodus of Israel from Egypt through the conquest of Canaan
1 Kings 6:1 marks the end of the exodus with the building of the temple in Jerusalem in the 140th year after leaving Egypt. It is the only event in the Bible that is dated from the Exodus.
7. Exodus through Ex 34 through 1 Samuel 9: The time of the rule of Moses and the judges
8. 1 Samuel 10 through Ezra 2: The time of the rule of the kings of Judah and Israel.
9. Ezra 2 - Nehemiah: the time of exile and return.
10. 1 - 3 Maccabees***: The time of the rule of priests; the formation of and beginning of the influence of the Pharisees and Sadducees; the beginning of the political influence of Rome.
11. Matthew through Revelation: The ministry of Christ and the church
*** Yes, I know, 1, 2, & 3 Maccabees are not canonical books but, like Josephus, they provide some historical information about the Jews between the times after the return from exile through the time when Rome began to insert itself into Jewish affairs. The scene set by the Gospels includes the presence of Roman overlords and kings appointed by Rome. (Herod)
