Biblical History/Scholarship Trivia

This next question will be multiple choice:

6. From the time before David conquered Jerusalem from the Jebusites what archaeological find was revealed to be in ancient Jerusalem?

A. A Hittite battle axe
B. A Canaanite defense tower
C. A copper mine
D. An Egyptian Temple
E. Altars for human sacrifice
F. Dozens of statues of cats
G. Lot's Wife
H. A slide going down the Siloam Tunnel with an inflatable goat skin raft

Good Luck. :)

Not really... was it B? :)

Haha on 'H', I was hoping it would be somewhat humorous. As for B, no but I will say that it is the most reasonable alternate answer (and actually I wouldn't be too surprised if someone proves me wrong and points out that one has been found), however I will say (as a hint) that the answer for this particular question is in the came category of find as B. Good guess though, try again!

The answer was 'D' "an Egyptian Temple", as odd as that may seem. I read several articles on it, and it seems a temple was found in Jerusalem with Egyptian artifacts inside of it. However just last week I read an opinion from an Egyptologist that is was actually a Canaanite temple merely showing Egyptian influence. Either way, I'll just stick to calling it an "Egyptian Temple" for simplicity.

See the following article for the story on it in Biblical Archaeology Review magazine: What’s an Egyptian Temple Doing in Jerusalem?. You can click on the "original article" link at the top for the PDF scan with pictures and all.

New Question:

7. Ramesses III (ruled 1186 B.C. to 1155 B.C.), who was the last truly significant pharaoh of the Ramesside period, suffered increasing invasions of Egypt during his reign which he had to fend off. In Year 8 of his reign, the Sea Peoples, including Peleset, Denyen, Shardana, Weshwesh of the sea, and Tjekker, invaded Egypt by land and sea. Pictures of these invasions are recorded at Ramesses III's mortuary temple at Medinet Habu, where he records that they were fended off but settled along the coast of Canaan. What people in the Bible were probably the Peleset recorded by Ramesses?

Alright, here's one for you guys...

Near the Old City of Jerusalem lie several mound clusters. A total of 19 mounds have been identified, all within 3 miles of each other, and set upon the top or the slop of a hill, and they have been dated from around the 7th Century B.C. The explanations for them have been debated since they were first published in 1874, but one archaeologist has a very plausible hypothesis as to what these mounds are.

Are they likely:

A. Burial grounds
B. Trash heaps
C. High places (of worship)
D. Ceremonial mourning grounds (for the death of kings)
E. Copper smelting sites

Yay! We have a winner! :)

I'm going to wing this and say C, High places of worship

I hate to break both of ya'lls hearts, but look 9 posts above this one (one of my posts) toward the bottom for the answer. :D

Well coo-koo-ca-choo!! I totally missed that :oops Drat, and I thought that was a good one too. Hmmmm...I'll have to do some more "digging" and find another question. :study

**EDIT** Here's the link to the article I summarized...it's quite thorough http://cojs.org/articles/BAR%202003%20M ... ystery.pdf

Haha. Well, rest assured though, it was a good one - a very good one. You also worded your question way better than I did, and you have rather convincing multiple choice answers (as Nick discovered :D)!

You get an A+ on detective work for the article too. That's the same article I read to formulate my question. I also happen to have a VHS lecture by Gabriel Barkay, who wrote that article, where he talks about his finds and that's where I first learned of it (only recently - in the last 6 months).
