Call upon His name - be saved

I keep thinking about the verse that says: Whosoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Many people have varying opinions on this verse.

Is God supposed to care for unbelievers? Can an unbeliever in time of danger or trouble be set free or saved or protected from danger by this Name (even though the person isn't a born again)? I might say, it is possible that God shows mercy or kindness to them.

By 'saved' I do not mean there are other 'ways'. Christ is the only Way. By 'saved' I mean delivered from your present critical condition...Take forinstance....In a war a sinner can cry unto God for his/her protection. Yet s/he's still a sinner.

John 3:16 For God so loved (All), and Romans 5:6. For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. It gets no better than that.

Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. A person becomes born of God when they call upon Jesus just as it did for the thief on the cross.

Romans 10:14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? . .
