Matthew 2
(23) And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.
(23) And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.
But that is only because you are reading it in English translated from Greek.
In Hebrew "Nazarene' would be netser (or netzer).
And here it is in the prophets ....
Isaiah 11
(1) And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch (netser) shall grow out of his roots:
(1) And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch (netser) shall grow out of his roots:
In the King James Version, there are 5 places in scripture that capitalizeBranchâ€, because each of the 5 times it is speaking of the Messiah.
It should be noted that the above instance of “Branch†a different Hebrew word is used than the others than the other 4 places it is capitalized.
Here are the other 4 places in which "Branch" is capitalized: “
Jeremiah 23
(5) Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch (tsemach), and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.
(5) Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch (tsemach), and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.
Jeremiah 33
(15) In those days, and at that time, will I cause the Branch (tsemach) of righteousness to grow up unto David; and he shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land.
(15) In those days, and at that time, will I cause the Branch (tsemach) of righteousness to grow up unto David; and he shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land.
Zechariah 3
(8) Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH (tsemach).
(8) Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH (tsemach).
Zechariah 6
(12) And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH (tsemach); and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD:
(12) And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH (tsemach); and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD:
Now, both netser and tsemach mean “branchâ€.
But netser is a particular kind of branch.
A netser is a shoot that sprouts from the root and becomes it’s own tree, away from the main tree.
It could be anywhere from a foot to 100 feet away, depending on how far the root system had spread. And it would grow even if the main tree had had fallen or died.
It GROWS UP in a different place than the main tree did.
Christ was from the root of Jesse (father of King David).
Born in Bethlehem (the city of David), but GREW UP in different place.
So, Christ would be called Netser ("Nazarene") as the prophets said!
And those in Christ are also called Netser ("Nazarene")
Acts 24
(5) For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes:
(5) For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes:
Isaiah 60
(21) Thy people also shall be all righteous: they shall inherit the land for ever, the branch (netser) of my planting, the work of my hands, that I may be glorified.
(21) Thy people also shall be all righteous: they shall inherit the land for ever, the branch (netser) of my planting, the work of my hands, that I may be glorified.
