What are some of the silly rules you have on your campus?

One of the silly rules we had at my school was the ban on weapons. I could not carry a gun on campus. To me that was dumb and unconstitutional.

I live on a VERY hilly campus.

we can't go sledding

I also live where we get lots of snow

The drug rule really isn't all that silly. Drugs are harmful and ought not be used.

I think the reason that my school is sort of, known as a "party school" is, well, there is nothing else to do. We have some sports u can play, But thats it. 2 campus's right across from eachother, no movie theatre, no paintball place, no bowling alley, no nearby amusment park or anything. All there is, Liquor store, Gas stations, Laundromat, Bars, and soem food places.

there is a catholic church that is on campus, technically it is an interfaith church, anyone can gather their at any time. Not to big of a thing cep't sunday's..

There are some clubs and such, but, none that are too interesting. Out door recreation club is the biggest one. They do some white water rafting trips, rock climbign etc, but its liek every other weekend and limited to 20 ppl per trip usually so...

I agree, my school has that rule too, though we do have a rifle and pistol club. I have a handgun in my apartment, one because I thought about joining the club, and two just because I can. Next year I won't be able to have my gun because I'm moving to a house owned by the school that my church rents.

Just because people have guns doesn't mean they are going to shoot other people.

I don't care if you have firearms in your apartment, thats fine. But my thing is, what on earth is the point of carrying one on campus? None.

It is in no way unconstitutional to say that you can't have firearms in certain areas. In some situations there is no reason what so ever to carry one, and doing so only increases the risk of accidental injury or plain old stupidity by a trigger happy gun owner in an inproper situation.

I agree that it is not necessary to always carry, that would be a little ridiculous, there is no reason to carry to class or anything like that. What I was referring to was some of the schools policies for clubs and stuff like that. You have to store your gun off campus and somehow get it here for rifle/pistol practices and competitions. The rule in some ways just doesn't make sense.

I completely see why they don't want them in dorms. But maybe the gun club may be able to set up a gun safe, or something like that. Or if one of the club members has a place off campus you could set up a safe there, or have them just keep the firearms. The school is put in a difficult situation too, with having guns on campus, that they would probably be somewhat legally liable for.

this isn't really a "silly" rule, i actually think it's a good one... but ... students on my campus bike around a lot and at night we HAVE to carry a bike light. i know this is definitely the safe way to go... but sometimes you just forget and those pesky campus cops are everywhere! and the tickets are so expensive just for forgetting a bike light... heh :P

One of the rules in my student handbook says that students attending a formal event who have a cough should come prepared with cough drops and a handkerchief so as not to disturb the performance. I think my school wrote the book when it comes to seemingly ridiculous rules (don't believe me? I'll send you excerpts from the handbook), and I've had an incredibly hard time reconciling them with what I have always believed is right and acceptable.

Forget drugs and alcohol! I'm so thankful that there's not a hint of that on my campus! The main controversy here is the length of skirts on girls and the type of music that is allowed. Music, for instance. I grew up listening to Contemporary Christian music, but my very fundamentalist university doesn't allow any music with a beat (sacred music only). Ultimately, this has challenged me in a huge way. I don't mind following the rules; if I want to go to the school, I agree to abide by their rules. It's that simple. But, in ways I can't really describe, it's done a number on my relationship with God - sort of the process of "I've been listening to this music all my life, and I grew close to Christ listening to this music, now you're telling me I've been wrong all along?" Even though I know I haven't. The same situation applied to several different issues. Now, I find I can't really enjoy CCM anymore because I'm always wondering if there is truth to my fundamental university's ban on CCM. I don't enjoy CCM, I question God, and... I don't blame this on the university, it's something I have to work out with Him.

Anyway, there is a fine line between legalism and maintaining a spotless reputation for Christ, and my university is trying to walk it. While reputation is important for our witness (we are told not to cause our brothers and sisters to stumble, though I'm not sure of the reference right now), I've pretty much come to the conclusion that Christians should be more concerned with their hearts than with their reputation. As long as we are seeking God every day, respecting other Christians with different views, and basing our lives on His word, our appearance to the world and our witness will follow.

Sorry for the essay - I'm just trying to figure this out for myself, and it's hard!

Actually, my college is pretty dang 'liberal' compared to colleges like Bob Jones and Liberty. We are, for example, allowed to watch R-rated movies, and do not have a curfew. We are also allowed into girls' dorms and townhouses, and vice-versa (albeit with some hour-restrictions).

The main thing I find pretty silly is the ban on smoking and drinking.
