However, don't confuse hosting with domain name registration (on a domain name server). A domain name is when the person types in the name of your web site and then it converts it to the IP address of the computer (server) that has the files. However, the cost is minimal.
The only downside to hosting your own is that you need backups and a reliable computer.
In that case, it may pay to steer away from Microsoft (which is the OS the instructions cater to, but I posted them to give you an idea what's happening) and go more toward Linux or any other reliable operating system. Of course getting rid of a flimsy operating system like Microsoft is no guarantee you won't have hardware failure no matter what you use. Until your hardware is fixed, your site is down. But if you can live with that, then I say, go for it!
