Here's an eighth grade final exam from 1895. The language could cause some barriers. Some things that were common knowledge back then is outdated, or unused terminology today. Still, when your grandparents told you that they only have an eighth grade edumakation, I'll bet you thought them to be a lot less smarter than you. Try it, and see how you do. I only have a GED, but I can tell by looking at it that my GED test was way easier.
On the other side of that, I've run into two completely separate people in my life that told me that the smartest person that they ever knew didn't know how to read or write. To quote an old rock song, that really makes me wonder.
