Luke 10:1 After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before His face into every city and place, whither He Himself would come.
The biblical number seven represents "spiritual perfection, God's seal and rest." Therefore, the seventy the Lord appointed, in addition to the twelve, speaks of His elect, His two witnesses (sent two by two) who are those He sends to teach the gospel. They are the spiritually perfect number (no matter what the actual number may be) of children chosen by Him to be sent forth.

10:2-3 Therefore said He unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that He would send forth labourers into His harvest. Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves.

The elect are filled with the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit is....the Lamb of God so they too are sent forth as lambs. It is interesting that the word lambs rather than sheep is used in that particular verse. Does that mean that when first called and sent we are not yet mature? We are as children, as His "little children?" Young and not yet mature we may be but those we face, the false prophets pretend to be sheep, mature Christians, but they are........
Matthew 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

10:16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

We must recognize them and be wiser than they and the serpent(s) are very knowledgeable in Scripture. The serpent even dared quote it to Christ! Jesus continued His instructions to the lambs......

Luke 10:4 Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way.
To me, this is a reference to the buying and selling that only those with the mark of the beast or the ravening wolves in sheep's clothing can do.

If one carries a purse and scrip it is to buy or sell and this speaks of spiritual teaching, not literal goods. To carry no shoes isn't literal either for it means when we are sent forth we go filled with the holy Lamb of God.....we stand on holy ground, on the Rock. When we stand on holy ground we are to.....

Exodus 3:5 And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.

Some of the underlying principles of course apply, but remember the dispensational background of the disciples here preaching the gospel of the kingdom before the Cross, before Pentecost.

One place the Lord told them not to take these things, yet in another passage He did. I believe He wanted them to trust Him to provide at that time. His miracle provision would be manifested. Also we need to listen to the direction of the Lord on each occasion for guidance on situations and not assume He will always say the same thing. That keeps us trusting in Him

I think you're correct in the way you are looking at the verse, shoes represent something spiritually as you said you think purse and strip represent buying and selling of spiritual truths. Jesus told the disciples they ought to wash each others feet as He washed theirs, this was not a physical command, it is a spiritual command. John the Baptist said he was unworthy to unlatch Jesus' shoes, again spiritual significance. Our feet carry us along our paths, and represent our ways. When John the Baptist said he was not worthy to unlatch Jesus' shoes he was saying he was not going to reveal Christs ways. Christ did that Himself, He is the way the truth and the life, and we are to walk without hiding our ways (without shoes) As Christ said nothing is hidden that shall not be revealed.
