OK, we have 3 cats and we have 3 dogs. I love and care for them all. But, I have to say I think dogs are the biggest pain in the katooshies!

Now, Cats! Feed them, open doors for them and keep their litter box clean and hey! they're happy. They keep your lap warm on cold winter nights, they amuse with their antics and they have that pleasant purring sound that soothes and relaxes. If they need something and you are just too plain stupid to figure out what they need, they might express a gentle mew. (Not like dogs who raise a cacophony whenever there is a dog, cat, bird, gerbil, car, airplane, motorcycle, moose, Roto-Rooter Man, Pizza Guy, white-tail deer, mule deer, mule, bison, meter reader, Aunt Millie or the kid with the runny nose happens to walk by.)

One cat, one dog.
The cat tolerates the dog.
The dog could care less.

Ha! This made me laugh!
We've one lab / shepherd mix who is about 4 years old.
We have one toy shelty (sp) who is just few months old.

We have one big "it" cat who is about 5 years old and we have one "Tom" who is less than a year old.

I'll take the cats thank you! Example, I let the dogs out this morning (Big dog goes on rope cause it's garbage day) and guess what? Dog gets out of his collar and makes me late for work trying to find him! grrrr

Ohh yeah, almost forgot... Big dog attacked a skunk Tuesday night on our deck... Yeah, at least the cat is smarter than that!

I had to give both dogs a bath in peroxide and Wed, my hands still smelled like skunk... and our bathroom... and our mud room...

Funny thing is, after awhile you don't smell it... and people today are just too polite to tell you that ya stink :-D

The dog, a Russel Terrier, has a favorite tree he likes to water.
The cat was preoccupied staring down the neighbor's cat nose to nose both with the fur standing on end. Neither one was moving, not batting an eye.
I let the dog out who made the customary pedal-to-the-medal beeline for the tree. Unfortunately the kitty kontest was directly in line with said tree. So what? Right between them without looking this way or that scattering cats and claws from here to yonder. The dog had no clue enjoying his relief in total privacy.

That's funny, Rick. Reminds me of when the kids let the pups in the house. After they galloped around a bit and were corralled and taken back outside (these are the cow dogs, not house pets) I walked back into my living room. There on the top of the TV cabinet was my cat Boo-Boo. He wasn't saying a work. It was just that he was about 2 feet wide diameter, because every hair was standing on end. Looked just like Humphrey Bear did when Donald Duck took him out of the dryer.

Jeff, the whole reason why I posted this thread was because I had just gotten back from driving 2 miles down the road to pick up my dog yet again. :x BTW, for the skunk stink, believe it or not, Massengal Feminine douche works really well. For your house, try sprinkling Arm and Hammer baking powder, or even the Arm and Hammer Carpet Freshener's on pretty much all the soft surfaces, let it stand for a while then vacuum. Spray vinegar on the hard surfaces and wipe. Then, peel some oranges, place the peelings in a teflon pan and cook them on low for a while.

Dog person here, but have nothing against cats.
We have a Shiba Inu, which is about as close as you can come to living with a fox.
I read after getting the dog that Shiba Inu's are about the most undomesticated breed out there.
We still love him and he can cuddle with the best of em'.

This one is not mine but shows what they look like.

Hey A-Christian,
Good looking dog!

That's funny Dora and Rick

Our big "it" cat is just too cool and doesn't get riled up about much. He'll just kinda stand there being cool knowing the dog will get tired soon enough and leave him alone.

Our younger cat loves to attack the little dog! It's so funny watching the cat do a sneak attack and then run off before the puppy knows what's going on!

As far as the skunk, thanks for the ideas! We heat our home mostly from our two wood burners, which of course we have pots of water boiling to help put some humidity back into the house. I know we've put some orange peels in the water a few times this winter just for the aroma, sounds like I'll just have to have an orange when I get home! (And thanks!!)

That's a great looking dog, A-C! I never read the bad press about any breed of dog. We've had both a doberman and a pit bull, both breeds with bad raps and both dogs were just as loving and goofy and great as any other of the dogs we've had.

As for the skunk ideas? Well, it's gone down in the Watrous Family Hall of Record and Fame, that Christmas morning when the dogs chased a skunk under the house! Yep, 4 crying children, 3 stinky dogs, 2 hacked-off parents and 1 skunk who sprayed the cellar furnace!

6 cats here. I once owned a German Shepherd Dog as a boy---- the most neurotic canine this side of the US. I loved that dog, but I'm more of a cat person---- just me, I guess. At least my cats generally do not act up, but the older ones hiss at one another on occasion when one is invading the other's space. But they have the whole outdoors to roam, so that is usually not a problem.

Ohhh MY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't know if I should laugh or cry!

Maybe yer doggies thought it was a cat?

Dogs are much more loving and devoted pets, than cats are.
If you want a low maintenance pet, get a cat.

If you want a pet who adores you, follows you, is happy to see you, protects you,
get a dog.

My house pal, all love doesn't complain would do anything for me. He is my home security,
better than store bought. Spayed Neutered shots and healthy as a horse

Looks like he's saying, "Well? You going to share that or what?"

You are so correct. Although I adore cats, I am honest enough to admit that dogs are more intelligent. However, I love cats' disconnected attitude.

If you are away and come back home, dogs will lick you and jump all over you with devotion. Actually, I do not like to be cuddled that much. That would irritate me to no end. Cats on the other hand will say if you return, "I think I remember you, but I'm not sure. Well, whoever you are, will you please fill my dish?" For some reason, that appeals to me---- the independence! That's why I own 6 cats!

If you want a really low maintenance pet, get a boa constrictor. Throw a couple of rats into it's cage every two weeks, fill the water and clean the cage once a month, and that's it!

You are so right about the snake. We used to have several over a period of a few years when I was a kid. You never knew they were around. Loved watching the little mouse get squeezed (I hate mice).

 About a year or so ago, we had banned pro-wrestling on TV for the kids. They were begging me one night to watch Friday Night Smackdown and I told them 'NO!' it was just too violent (among other things :-? ) for them to watch.

Then Steve came in with some rats. And they spent the next 1/2 hour watching the snake kill them and eat them. :smt017

Ha! My wife just sent this to me!

A dog is truly a man's best friend.

If you don't believe it, just try this experiment.

Put your dog and your wife in the trunk of the car for an hour.

When you open the trunk, which one is really happy to see you???

Now, try that with your cat! I'll take an even bet that the cat would either just sit there looking at you, or it would make a mad dash to get out!

As far as the wife.. I don't think I'd be the one opening the trunk!

Actually, I tried that with one of my cats. He just managed to escape via the backseat and then drove the car away---- I think the car was faster to catch up to the mice he was after :-D
