What gives with our obsession with celebrities? We build them up, tear them down, and laugh (look at Lindsay lohan). And women...god help an aging female celebrity.

I'm just curious about the dynamics of all this. What gives with American culture in the 21st century? Is it because the economy is terrible and their lives are so much cooler than our lives? Escape from the prosaic realities of life for 99% of the population?

I don't even watch the news anymore. Used to be that celeb news was mostly on entertainment tonight or whatever and the "normal" news was just...news. Maybe somewhat biased news, but news, nonetheless. Now,you turn on "normal" news and you get a lot of celeb stuff. Its ridiculous.

Any thoughts on this? I'm 30. For those of you who are older....have things intensified? Do they wax and wane?

yes,in the world, and the worldly/carnal,(news,entertainment,religion,etc etc etc) things get worse and worse until Yeshua returns.
not just for 'people', but for the so-called 'God's people' (in the world)
Compare Peter in 2 Peter 2:1-22 regarding false prophets and teachers who entice others away from a true holy lifestyle as exemplified by Yeshua to follow “the way of Bila'am, son of Beor” [2 Peter 2:15], who appeal to “lustful desires of sinful human nature” [2 Peter 2:18]; for these Peter teaches there is no place in the calling/meeting/ekklesia of the Holy One.
(2 Peter 2:17)>
For them Peter says, “blackest darkness is reserved.

when Yeshua returns, isn't it for a "Perfect Bride" ?

It's called envy.
.

I don't pay attention to celebrities. They are of this world.I have better things to focus on.

It's really one of the shallowest things western people do. It's like we don't have any real important issues in our own lives to care about?

Yesterday half of my facebook news feed wall was full of articles about stolen nude photos of Jennifer Lawrence. No kidding. Half of my facebook newsfeed, both from private people and from groups/ blogs. I mean, seriously.... who cares. Except for the seriously important aspect of computer/ cell phone security, what's the big deal about it? There are nude pictures of people everywhere on the internet, so why bother me with a nude actress? Just because she's famous? Does she have three boobs, or what's the big deal about it?

I agree. Recently I stopped watching TV shows that glorify a beautiful women that are abnormally skinny, who are obtaining wealth through seductive (soft porn/porn)* actions such as explicit words or dancing like a stripper. I stopped watching music video's on youtube for this reason.

I mean, men have higher sex drives but does it REALLY have to be always about sex? What about morally talented or intelligent?

*Such as Carls Junior Fast Food Restaurants or Victoria Secret commercials.

One other comment I have to make:

When I was in my early 20's all the guys in my youth group would not date an "average" looking woman. They all wanted hot wives and didn't give us others the time of day. Shouldn't they be looking for women who are sincere in their faith, living as Christ, that they may edify their own relationship with God?

And, now to be honest: My husband is not saved. He is Buddhist. We are very much in love, and I pray daily that I may be an example of Jesus to him. I pray daily that he would come to Christ. I am not sorry for being with him because I love him sincerely. We both were pretty mentally ill when we met. We have a mutual understanding about illness. He is the one for me. I don't want to sound like a hypocrite, and that is why I am telling this. I am growing spiritually and God is changing my life, and I hope and hope and hope that one day he will believe.

That being said, if anything happend to us, if I lost him (because I am not leaving him EVER) I would go about the proper way of courting.

Anyway,

That's my take.

I'm a fan of an anime voice actor who's a Christian and has admirable character (I'm even in an online fan club), so I suppose I can understand being a fan of a popular music artist if you like their music or something such as that. But aside from that, I really don't get the celebrity craze, yeah. I can't possibly care less.

Oh yeah, and if it counts I've been a fan of Lassie (who still exists, they line breed the dogs) for years. It's where my love for collies began. But I love the dog celebrity for what she represents...courage, loyalty, etc.

I loved the television show "Lassie" when I was growing up.One of our neighbors had a Collie just like Lassie. Her name was Princess. She was really sweet.

50 years ago those commercials would've been rated X.
.
I know. I think each generation becomes more and more promiscuous. I remember when shorts were at the knee. Now they're up to the bum. There are so many more examples but I'm not in the mood to rant about it.
It's just annoying.

If I had gone out of the house with some of the tops I see on some of these young ladies....well I wouldn't get outside the house.

It's all about marketing.

Take for example the recent story about the celebrities who say their nude photos where stolen off the Apple Icloud. Did you notice how many celebrities started to pip up and say their photos where stolen also?

That most likely caused their names to be searched over and over in the latest media tools which makes their name begin to trend on search engines and social media sites.

The obsession of celebrities is not real. It's made up by the marketing machine of the world. Often the celebrities themselves are involved in the effort. They are, in and of, themselves, a products to be traded for money.

If they can temped you (or people in general) into believing, or thinking, that these people and their situations or whatever, are a big deal, then they can get your attention. If they get your attention then they can sell magazines, and ads; get you to see what's the latest fashion and trends in our culture. Even the news is in on all this.

Over the years it takes more and more to get the attention of people. The culture has become callus to shocking, interesting, or scandalous topics. That's why these stories seem to get more and more shocking. It's just the world doing what the world dose to generate money.

Back in the day, and still today, if you go to a state fair, you'll see a "freak show". Out side there is a man, or these days a recoding, that says; "Step right up folks. See the amazing lobster boy"..... or whatever. You pay your $1; go in and see a person with a common genetic defect, and realize not only have you been suckered, but they just made you the freak.
