Leaders Must Resist The Devil, And Flee From Ungodly Temptations

Scripture teaches that Satan fell through pride. He exalted himself such that he began comparing himself to the Most High God, and as a result he was cast down to the earth, so he now fights against God and seeks to undermine everything He does as His enemy.

This includes in the church, where he takes every opportunity to corrupt God's leaders and fill them with the same spirit of pride that caused him to fall. Peter therefore now begins to warn those who were shepherding God's people of the pitfalls they could potentially face as God's leaders, with temptations to pride and personal gain being chief among them.

1 The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed: 2 Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; 3 nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; 4 and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away. 5 Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” (1 Peter 5:1-7)

In the next few verses, Peter will add that Satan roams about as a hungry lion seeking who he may devour, and by that he meant through persecution. But if Satan can seduce God's leaders instead, he doesn’t need to destroy them. He can simply corrupt them and use them for his own ends. So he attempts to do this through the means Peter mentioned, such as becoming abusive "lords" over those entrusted to them, rather than simply serving as their examples. This is reminiscent of how the Lord warned the disciples that they must not "lord it over" others but be their servants (Matthew 20:25-28). He taught the same thing in Matthew 24, when He warned that if they began to abuse His people, they would come to a terrible end.

45 “Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his master made ruler over his household, to give them food in due season? 46 Blessed is that servant whom his master, when he comes, will find so doing. 47 Assuredly, I say to you that he will make him ruler over all his goods. 48 But if that evil servant says in his heart, ‘My master is delaying his coming,’ 49 and begins to beat his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunkards, 50 the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him and at an hour that he is not aware of, 51 and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (Matthew 24:45-51)

Satan seduces leaders of God through pride especially, and in particular those who move in great supernatural gifts. For example, he attempted to make Paul and Barnabas "gods" after they healed a crippled man in the city of Lystra.

And in Lystra a certain man without strength in his feet was sitting, a cripple from his mother’s womb, who had never walked. 9 This man heard Paul speaking. Paul, observing him intently and seeing that he had faith to be healed, 10 said with a loud voice, “Stand up straight on your feet!” And he leaped and walked. 11 Now when the people saw what Paul had done, they raised their voices, saying in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!” 12 And Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, because he was the chief speaker. 13 Then the priest of Zeus, whose temple was in front of their city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, intending to sacrifice with the multitudes.(Acts 14:8-13)

But while he failed with Paul, Church records show that some of the early leaders were indeed seduced away from the faith into starting their own cults that practiced sorcery and sexual perversion instead, such as the Nicolatians, whom the church fathers say was founded by the same Nicolas mentioned in Acts, whom the apostles laid hands on but was turned by the enemy and corrupted into leading men into sin instead.

Watch Lest You Fall

Paul warned in one place that those who thought they were standing should watch lest they fall. In another place he compared believers to Eve being bewitched by the serpent. This was of course an allusion to being tempted by the Devil, where Satan planted in her mind the notion that they would be "as gods" if they ate of the tree God had forbidden them from eating from.

2 And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; 3 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, 'You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.'" 4 Then the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." (Genesis 3:2-5)

Like with Paul and Barnabas, Satan still attempts to lift people up with pride when they move in greater supernatural gifts today, and the Spirit of God is warning that there are indeed dangers involved. The Lord Himself has given visions in which He warns that the Holy Spirit is given for no other reason than to glorify Him.

"There is as a great danger in walking in great power," the Lord responded. "It has happened to many of My messengers, and that is part of the message they are to give to My last-day church. You must walk in My power, and even much greater power than these experienced. But if you ever start to think that the power is My endorsement of you, or even of your message, you will open the door to the same delusion. The Holy Spirit is given only to testify of Me. If you are wise like Paul, you will learn to glorify more in your weaknesses than in your strengths.

True faith is the true recognition of who I am. It is nothing more and nothing less. But you must always remember - even if you abide in My presence and see Me as I am - you can still fall if you turn from Me and look back at yourself. That is how Lucifer fell. He dwelt in this room and beheld My glory and the glory of the Father. However, he began to look at himself more than he looked to Us. He then began to take pride in his position and power.

Many of My servants who have been allowed to see My glory and be entrusted with My power have fallen in the same way as Lucifer. If you begin to think that it is because of your wisdom, your righteousness, or even your devotion to pure doctrine, you will stumble too." (Joyner, Final Quest, P.180-181)

As we shall cover in the last section, giving in to the temptations of Satan after you have worked to bring souls to Christ is a terrible and tragic mistake. As scripture warns, it would be better not to have known the way of life, then having found it to turn aside to the ways of darkness again.

Avoiding A Great Tragedy

Satan wants to seduce God's leaders away from him as a type of trophy, but in reality he hates them intensely rather than loving them. Those who make the sad mistake of falling for his seductions will find this out, but only when it is too late.

The following is an excerpt from A Divine Revelation Of Hell, and tells the sad account of one servant of God who got seduced away from the faith, and where he ended up. The torment he goes through to this day for giving himself into the hands of an exceedingly hateful god should be something that gets the attention of any true Christian leader.

Ahead of us I could hear voices and the cries of a soul in torment. We walked up the small hill and looked over. A light filled the area, so I could see clearly. Cries like you have never thought possible were filling the air. They were the cries of a man. "Listen to Me," said Jesus. "What you are about to see and hear is true. Take heed you ministers of the gospel, for these are faithful and true sayings. Awake, evangelists, preachers, and teachers of My Word, all of you who are called to preach the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. If you are sinning, repent or you will likewise perish."

We walked up to within fifteen feet of this activity. I saw small dark-clothed figures marching around a boxlike object. Upon closer examination, I saw that the box was a coffin and the figures marching around it were demons. It was a real coffin, and there were twelve demons marching around it. As they marched, they were chanting and laughing. Each one had a sharp spear in his hand, which he kept thrusting into the coffin through small openings that lined the outside.

There was a feeling of great fear in the air, and I trembled at the sight before me. Jesus knew my thoughts, for He said, "Child, there are many souls in torment here, and there are many different types of torment for these souls. There is greater punishment for those who once preached the gospel and went back into sin, or for those who would not obey the call of God for their lives." I heard a cry so desperate that it filled my heart with despair. "No hope, no hope!" he called. The hopeless cry came from the coffin. It was an endless wail of regret.

A dirty-gray mist filled the inside of the coffin. It was the soul of a man. As I watched, the demons pushed their spears into the soul of the man in the coffin. I will never forget the suffering of this soul. I cried to Jesus, "Let him out, Lord; let him out." The torment of his soul was such a terrible sight. If only he could get free. I pulled at Jesus' hand and begged Him to let the man out of the coffin. Jesus said, "My child, peace, be still." As Jesus spoke, the man saw us. He said, "Lord, Lord, let me out. Have mercy." I looked down and saw a bloody mess. Before my eyes was a soul. Inside the soul was a human heart, and blood spurted from it. The thrusting of the spears were literally piercing his heart.

"I will serve You now, Lord." He begged, "Please let me out." I knew that this man felt every spear that pierced his heart. "Day and night, he is tormented," the Lord said. "He was put here by Satan, and it is Satan who torments him." The man cried, "Lord, I will now preach the true gospel. I will tell about sin and Hell. But please help me out of here." Jesus said, "This man was a preacher of the Word of God. There was a time when he served Me with all his heart and led many people to salvation. Some of his converts are still serving Me today, many years later. The lust of the flesh and the deceitfulness of riches led him astray. He let satan gain the rule over him. He had a big church, a fine car, a large income. He began to steal from the church offerings. He began to teach lies. He spoke mostly half-lies and half-truths. He would not let Me correct him. I sent My messengers to him to tell him to repent and preach the truth, but he loved the pleasures of this life more than the life of God. He knew not to teach or preach any other doctrine except the truth as revealed in the Bible. But before he died, he said the Holy Ghost baptism was a lie and that those who claimed to have the Holy Ghost were hypocrites. He said you could be a drunkard and get to heaven, even without repentance.

"He said God would not send anyone to Hell -that God was too good to do that. He caused many good people to fall from the grace of the Lord. He even said that he did not need Me, for he was like a god. He went so far as to hold seminars to teach this false doctrine. He trampled My Holy Word under his feet. Yet, I continued to love him. My child, it is better to have never known Me than to know Me and turn back from serving Me," said the Lord. "If only he had listened to You, Lord!" I cried. "If only he had cared about his soul and the souls of others." "He did not listen to Me. When I called he would not hear Me. He loved the easy life. I called and called him to repentance, but he would not come back to Me. One day he was killed and came immediately here. Now satan torments him for having once preached My Word and saved souls for My kingdom. This is his torment."

I watched the demons as they continued to march around and around the coffin. The man's heart beat and real blood ran from it. I will never forget his cries of pain and sorrow. Jesus looked at the man in the coffin with great compassion and said, "The blood of many lost souls are upon this man's hands. Many of them are in torment here right now." With sorrowful hearts, Jesus and I walked on. As we left, I saw another group of demons coming up to the coffin. They were about three feet high, dressed in black clothes, with black hoods over their faces. They were taking shifts tormenting this soul. I thought of how pride in all of us at times makes us unwilling to admit mistakes and ask for forgiveness. We refuse to repent and humble ourselves, and we go on as if we alone were ever right. But listen, soul, Hell is real. Please do not go to that place. (Baxter, A Divine Revelation Of Hell, P.69-74)

Questions And Applications

1. What is your opinion. If God gifted the Christian leaders you know of to walk in great supernatural power, do you think they would succumb to temptations like greed or self-glorification, or do you think they would resist and stand their ground? I have a thread I can link that suggests some leaders in modern times have indeed succumbed.

2. What if this happened to you, and you moved in prophecy to the nations, or the casting out of demons, or the raising of the dead, and you had a lot of people looking to you. Are there any temptations you think you might succumb to, or do you think you are at a stage where you would not be tempted no matter what he offered?

3. If you were an up and coming leader, go back to the passage at the beginning of this study and post what appears to be Peter's advice to them at the end of the passage. Do you think it's good advice or bad, and state your reasons why?

It would be easy to think none of the temptations would faze you , but if you are not in that situation on the battle field with Satan yet you would be wise to consider being ready for the offers when they come . To recognize the devils food cake when it come your way , the devil could start out with a small offer and gradually build your debt to him . The devil is cunning and most subtle .

Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

13There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Exactly. There's a suggestion in 1st Thessalonians as well that Satan can and will come for the average believer, a and I don't think it is properly counting the cost to start off down the road to serving Christ and potentially doing damage to the kingdom of darkness if we don't prepare ourselves for being offered things according to our greatest weaknesses, or attacked in areas where we are most susceptible to succumbing.
