Refuting The Wickedness And Deceptiveness Of Cunningly Devised Myths

maxresdefault-4.jpg

The heresy early Christians were dealing with in this letter runs deeper than what appears on the surface, but the apostle Peter will now bring up the heart of the problem. They were making up "myths" to invent an entirely different Christ, one who supposedly hated the God of the Jews, practiced witchcraft and had never come in the flesh. But this bore no resemblance to the Jesus Peter walked with for three years, whom he witnessed manifesting the glory of God during the transfiguration.

16 For we did not follow cunningly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” 18 And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. (2 Peter 1:16-18)

Evidence is abundant that these heretics were the Gnostics. For starters, Peter will describe them as "promising men (sexual) freedom, yet themselves being slaves of corruption" (2 Peter 2:19-22). As we shall see, this was the same thing taught by the early Gnostics, and the Gnostics very well created "cunningly devised myths" to seduce people away from the truth into sexual sin. Firstly, they taught that Jesus was not the son of the Old Testament God but supposedly of a different "god" and His enemy, now trying to "free" mankind from His sexually oppressive commandments. So whose son was He? Some Gnostic sects referred to him as Abraxas, a chicken-headed "god" with large snakes for legs, and holding a flail in one hand and a shield in the other.

This image was found on numerous ancient amulets and magic rings. Yet as the accounts of those who have been transported into the spirit realm reveal, this is a typical form that demonic spirits actually take, especially those charged with deceiving mankind through false religion.

In the early 80s, Harold Pittman, a former Baptist minister was shown various classes of demons that are especially active in the world now. Among them was a class that had special expertise in the areas of sorcery, false religion, magic, occultism, necromancy and Satanism. As he stated from seeing their actual appearance:

The third most powerful type and group of demons were revealed to me in mixed shapes and forms. Some had human form, while others had half-human and half-animal forms. Others resembled mixed animals in their forms. These demons possessed skills in the dark arts, such as witchcraft and other related areas. (Pittman, Placebo. P.20)

That the Gnostics hated the God of the Jews can be seen in numerous quotes from the early church writers. It was taught that He and His angels "ruled the world ill because each one of them coveted the principal power for themselves," and that a man's actions were "not righteous in the nature of things, but by mere accident, in light of how those angels who made the world thought fit to constitute them, seeking by means of such precepts to bring men into bondage." (Ireneaus, Against Heresies, XXII, 3). In other words, what Christians thought were sins were only sin because the Old Testament God and His angels said they were, and they had given such commandments only to subjugate humanity.

But writing in the 2nd Century, Ireneaus clarified that it was in reality a demonic spirit who had given them these doctrines, and once they had received them, other demons entered in to corrupt them completely.

Impious indeed, and beyond all impiety are these men, who assert that the Maker of Heaven and earth was produced by means of a defect... yet the more they seem to excel others in wisdom, the greater fools do they show themselves. For when the unclean spirit of folly has come forth, finding them not waiting upon God, he then "taking seven other spirits more wicked than himself" and inflates the minds of these men with the notion of being able to conceive of something beyond God, and having fitly prepared them for the reception of deceit, he implants within them... the foolish spirits of wickedness." (Ireneaus, Against Heresies, XVI).

The Gnostics also proclaimed that this demonic "father" was revealed to mankind only after the advent of "Christ," which explains why no one knew him before then. So they were in effect reinventing everything the real Jesus preached, and making Him out to be an enemy of the God of Abraham.

They adduce the following passage as the highest testimony... "All things have been delivered unto me by My Father, and no one knows the Father but the Son, or the Son but the Father, and he to whom the Son will reveal Him." In these words they affirm that He (supposedly) clearly showed that the Father of truth, conjured into existence by them, was known to no one before His advent. And they desire to construe the passage as if teaching that the Maker and Framer of the world was always known by all, but the Lord spoke these words concerning the "father" unknown to all, whom they now proclaim. (Ireneaus, Against Heresies, XX).

As for the God of the Jews, he was just another angel who fought with other angels for control over the nations. All of them together were merely self-serving tyrants who sought to bring mankind into subservience to them through unnecessary laws, especially regarding sexual conduct. And that Jesus was crucified according to what the apostles taught was a lie. The real "Jesus" had supposedly only come in spirit.

Those then who know these things have been freed from the principalities who formed the world, so that it is not incumbent upon us to confess Him who was crucified, but him who came (only) in the form of a man, and was thought to be crucified, and was called Jesus, and was sent by "the father," that by this dispensation he might destroy the works of the makers of the world. If anyone therefore confesses the crucified, that man is still a slave and under the power of those who formed our bodies. But he who denies Him has been freed from these beings, and is acquainted with the dispensation of the unborn father. (Ireneaus, Against Heresies, XXIV, P.4).

These then are the exaggerations Peter was talking about when he said, "when they speak great and swelling exaggerations, they allure through the lusts of the flesh and through sexual licentiousness those who have escaped from the ones living in error. For while they promise them freedom, they themselves are slaves of corruption. For by whatever a person is overcome, by that he is also brought into enslavement. (2 Peter 2:18-19)

Advocation Of Sorcery

Gnosticism advocated the use of sorcery and witchcraft, and still does today. Modern Gnostics not only use witchcraft but practice it upon true Christians as well. Like their ancient counterparts, they attribute Christ's "miracles" to use of occult magic. The disciples of Simon the Magician were apparently among the first to do this, after Simon himself went back into sorcery wholeheartedly after parting ways with the apostle Peter in the Book of Acts. As Ireneaus also added:

The mystic priests belonging to this sect both lead profligate lives and practice magical arts, each one to the extent of his ability. They use exorcisms and incantations, love-potions too, and charms, as well as those beings who are called "Paredri" (familiars) and "Oniropompi" (dream senders), and whatever other curious arts can be had recourse to, are eagerly pressed into their service. (Ireneaus, Against Heresies, XXIII, 4).

The followers of Carpocrates were described in much the same way, indicating it was not a fluke but standard practice amongst the early Gnostic sects to practice of sorcery in the name of "Christ."

They practice also magical arts and incantations, philters also, and love potions, and have recourse to familiar spirits, dream-sending demons and other abominations, declaring that they possess power to rule over even now the princes and formers of this world. (Ireneaus, Against Heresies, XXV, 3).

These words suggest they even believed they had magical power over the God of the Jews. No surprise, however, since they depicted Him as just another demon. In some sects He was called "Ialdabaoth," a lion-headed demon with the body of a snake, and together with His angels He supposedly no longer had power over them, for they were aware of His "lies" and self-serving wickedness.

In supposedly representing "true" Christianity, a Gnostic magician named Marcus was described as little more than a spiritual predator who used witchcraft to seduce women, especially richer woman, into sexual enslavement through the invocation of demons.

It appears probable enough that this man possesses a demon by means of whom he appears able to prophecy, and also enable as many as he counts worthy to be partakers of his grace to prophesy also... But such spirits as are commanded by these men and speak when they desire it are earthly and weak, audacious and impudent, sent forth by Satan for the seduction and perdition of those who do not hold fast that well-compacted faith which they received at first through the church. Moreover, that this Marcus compounds philters and love potions in order to insult the persons of some of these women, if not all, those of them who have returned to the church of God - a thing which frequently occurs - have acknowledged, confessing too, that they have been sexually defiled by him, and were filled with a burning passion towards him. (Ireneaus, Against Heresies, XIII 3-5)

The True Lord Jesus Christ

The New Testament teaching was clear that Jesus had come in the flesh, and any spirit who attempted to prophesy otherwise was not of God but of the Devil.

1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. (1 John 4:1-3)

Evil spirits operating through Gnostics would seek to "prophesy" in the midst of Christian congregations, introducing their heresies subtly. But when someone discerned that the spirit speaking was not of God, they would ask it if Jesus had come in the flesh. If the spirit answered no, they knew it was a demonic spirit and not of God. The disciples had physically handled him in the flesh, and not just during His three years of ministry but even after the resurrection, so they knew better (John 20:24-31).

Moreover, not only did Jesus not come anywhere close to hating the Old Testament God, early church teaching held that He actually WAS the God of the Old Testament.

1 Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, 2 all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ. 5 But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness (1 Corinthians 10:1-5)

Paul taught that the Son of God existed before all things were created (Colossians 1:16). John also taught that "All things came into being through Him, and without Him not one thing came into being.... He was in the world, and the world came into being through Him, yet the world did not know Him" (John 1:3, 10). Hebrews stated that God "has spoken to us by a Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom He also created the worlds" (Hebrews 1:2). And in John's Gospel, Jesus referred to His own preexistence before creation when He said, "So now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had in Your presence before the world existed" (John 17:5). He also stated in another place, "Before Abraham came into being, I Am" (John 8:58).

And as Peter referenced in the opening of this letter, during the transfiguration he had witnessed the true Lord Jesus Christ clothed in glory and virtue, not the filth of sexual immorality and spiritual uncleanness.

1 Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves; 2 and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. 3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. 4 Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, let us make here three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." 5 While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!" (Matthew 17:1-5)

Lastly, Jesus did not practice witchcraft. This was an accusation brought by the Devil, who was operating through the Pharisees and wanted to frame Him and then kill Him. But the work of the Spirit of God would not be vilified. The works Christ did were through the Holy Spirit, and they would forever be held accountable if they taught otherwise.

14 Then the Pharisees went out and plotted against Him, how they might destroy Him... 22 And one was brought to Him who was demon-possessed, blind and mute, and He healed him, so that the blind and mute man both spoke and saw... 24 But when the Pharisees heard it they said, "This fellow does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons." 25 But Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them... 31 "Every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven Him, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come. (Matthew 12:14, 22, 24-32)

Questions & Applications

1. What stood out in your mind when reading this study. Do you recall any thoughts in particular?

2. Gnosticism is alive and well today. I have been watching them on the Christian forums for years now. A few months ago one joined another Christian forum and posted a Gnostic YouTube video to secretly promote it in the guise of "just seeking to understand." Smelling a rat, I informed the member that posting Gnostic material was forbidden on that site, yet she kept hammering away with, "But I just want to know what the Christian responses are to these views." I deleted the video and locked the thread down, but have now undeleted it for the sake of demonstration for this study.

If I had allowed it to stay up, what would your answers have been to her?

Original thread:

3. Paul taught not to entertain debating heresies like these, because it might lead to the downfall of the hearer. Even though they might be fully capable of refuting such nonsense, defenders of God's word were to shun it instead, knowing entertaining it could potentially influence others who might be listening on (2 Timothy 2:16-26). Would you have the ability to resist refuting such teachings if they were presented around you and refrain from debating it, or would the temptation to get in their face be too great? Be honest.

4. Nevertheless, the church must be educated in these things or they will be open to Gnostic deceptions they are not familiar with. Without necessarily copying the things stated in this study word for word but seeking to put them in your own and inject your own thoughts on the matter, how do you say that the following teachings are false based on scripture?

5. There has been a move in more recent years to claim that various other supernatural manifestations of God were accomplished merely through occult means, such as that Paul's trip to Third Heaven was accomplished through astral projection. What would your reply be to such arguments?

It it believed that “demons” unlike fallen angels are the spirits of the nephilum as well as the creatures that were conceived during the days of Noah.

Beings such as human animal hybrids which God forbid the mixing of the seeds.

The angels who sinned during the days of Noah were said to have taught mankind as well as their children forbidden ancient knowledge such as the making of gunpowder and other forbidden knowledge.

For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment; and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly; 2 Peter 2:4-5

This “spirits” Pittman saw were probably the disembodied unclean spirits from the days of Noah that wander the spirit world until the day of Judgement.

Well it's possible. I know that according to Jewish legend there was a ton of bad experimentation going on. The other theory is that some fallen angels deliberately chose to take on more perverted spiritual forms of their own freewill, given that as spirit beings they can assume any visible form they choose.

Hard to say.

Questions & Applications

1. What stood out in your mind when reading this study. Do you recall any thoughts in particular?

Answer: It is somewhat complicated, due to the Gnostics being ancient and largely covered up. So I feel the need to revisit some of what I've read about them and to reorganize the material in my mind, perhaps for the benefit of others here.

a. The Gnostics were sometimes nominally Christian and were "goats in sheep's clothing." They copied the "power" Christians possess by making use of self power and demonic power.
b. These heretics invented the myth of 2 gods, the OT God being viewed as inferior and legalistic and enslaving, and the NT God being a different God, producing a "spiritual" Christ who opposed the OT God and "liberates" people from his controlling laws.
c. The "Christ" of the Gnostics was "spiritual" and not physical, indicating a kind of dualism that liberates people from evils encased in their physical bodies. The thought is that entering into the revelation of this false "Christ' people will be liberated both legally and spiritually. Liberation from "lawfulness" is a lie that Gnostics promoted.

Answer: It requires wisdom to know when to indulge an honest question from the Dark Side, and when to cancel its obviously insincere effort to corrupt and indoctrinate into heresy. I've known a good number of people with pagan attitudes, who consider Christian revelation "empty or subjective" and view their own religious assumptions as "interesting and thoughtful." It requires God's revelation to focus on where these deceived people are really open to truth that wants to liberate them in reality. Those who are insincere must be ignored and dismissed.

3. Paul taught not to entertain debating heresies like these, because it might lead to the downfall of the hearer. Answer: I enjoy trying to answer questions, no matter where they come from. All deserve to hear the truth and need to have it made known to them, just as it was to me. I think you're right to avoid a meaningless debate that is going nowhere.

4. Nevertheless, the church must be educated in these things or they will be open to Gnostic deceptions they are not familiar with. Without necessarily copying the things stated in this study word for word but seeking to put them in your own and inject your own thoughts on the matter, how do you say that the following teachings are false based on scripture?

Answer: Like you've said, the Scriptures, without saying so explicitly, are likely dealing with Gnosticism and provide doctrines that can refute it. The Scriptures teach the Deity of Christ, originating from the one God of the OT. This refutes the Gnostic view of "2 gods."

Generally, the Bible views Christ was physical, and 1 John especially does so. This refutes any sense of a purely "spiritual" Christ. Christ manifested works of righteousness in his *physical being.* That is, it was not just "spiritual" and discerned by "revelation."

Teaching that the God of the Mosaic Law was evil is refuted by the regular praise of God's Law in the Bible.

Paul's NT sense of liberation from the Law is said to be a "fulfillment of the Law," rather than a war against it. We are liberated from evil acts, and enabled to do righteous acts in our physical being.

Paul's sense of our "death to the flesh" does not nullify our physical being, but rather, places Christ's spirituality, which is manifest in our physical being, over any spirituality that does not manifeest Christ's spirituality in a righteousness viewed physically.

Since biblically we live by the Spirit of Christ, viewed physically, we manifest the freedom that Christ himself displayed. He was not subject to the "Law of Sin," because biblically, he was sinless and iin no need of subjecting himself to laws of redemption from sin.

So, living in Christ we exhibit the same kind of freedom from those legal requirements while also displaying the lawfulness of Christ in exhibiting righteousness in his flesh.

Colossians, in particular, shows us that Legalism is conformity to laws that are empowered by Self, and not physically exhibiting true righteousness by the power of Christ. Conformity to rules is not equal to conformity to righteousness that is physically evident.

5. There has been a move in more recent years to claim that various other supernatural manifestations of God were accomplished merely through occult means, such as that Paul's trip to Third Heaven was accomplished through astral projection. What would your reply be to such arguments?

I've encountered those who claimed to have astral projections and magical powers. I've found it somewhat characteristic that "evil demonstrations" in my presence do not work because I live by the Spirit of Christ. I wouldn't make this a hard rule, however. God may allow satanic demonstrations of power even in the midst of Christians.

The revelation of Satan is real, and we should not be surprised. It has to be acknowledged simply because the power is real and somewhat effective. We should not be surprised that invisible demons can manifest themselves, provide revelations, and do supernatural works. Our focus should be on the power of Christ, whose works provide visible evidence of righteousness and deliverance.

This is, in my view, a difficult study but well worth delivering. Thank you. It will require some work to fully understand for those less acquainted with it. And the biblical theology of operating in NT truth is vital to understand when confronted with a false doctrine of liberation.
