Christian contentment

1 Timothy 6.6 says: 'Godliness with contentment is great gain'.

It is encouraging, by His grace, just to reflect quietly on how much we owe the Lord and how good He is to us and how our inward and spiritual blessings cannot be affected by any raging storms and circumstances.

There was a guy whose name I've forgotten who, many years ago, wrote a book called 'That rare jewel of Christian contentment'. (Something like Burrows, or Borroughs.)

It's good to be able to go to sleep at night, knowing that He liberally grants His peace to all who trust in His Son's work at the Cross. To be a Christian is to do, certainly; it is to serve, indeed. But being a Christian is also and maybe above all to be. To be content, and worship Him.

(Two cents' before I sign off for the night.)

Hi Farouk,

I looked up this book by Jeremiah Burroughs. He states contenment as described in Phil 4:11. Good way to sign off for the night....

11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.
Phil 4:11 (KJV)

When we look at ancient Israel, they were discontented. When we are contented it shows that we are THANKFUL. God has made provision for us and we need not worry about not having the things that we seem to crave so much. I believe we as Christians need to ask God to give a contented spirit. Thanks for this reminder Farouk.

Hi abide:

Ty & John MacArthur is a good preacher!

Blessings.

Ty and yes Phil 4.11 is a great and relevant verse here. The refs. in Phil. 4 to peace, prayer and thanksgiving are also connected to the condition of Godly contentment, I think.

Blessings.

Matthew25:21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

If we can be content in only having a slice of bread and a glass of water our joy should be full in the Lord in thanking him for that which we do have and not looking at what we do not have.

Yes, there's a good thought!

Job says: 'Better a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith'.

Blessings.

Definitely agree with this! I believe when we are discontent we are not truly thankful for what we have.

Yes, Ashley: Paul could say in Philippians 4.11, 'I have learned in whatsoever state I am therewith to be content.' For him, it was a sometimes tumultuous experience, but I believe it.

Blessings.

I was thinking of David's words in Psalm 46:

'Be still, and know that I am God.'

There is nothing quite like being content to acknowledge the presence of God in the stillness and wait on Him in Scripture meditation and prayer.
