Have devoted myself to God over the last few months and I find that all being a furry means is thinking that anthro animals are cool. The idea of a fursona is just having qualities of either your personality or one's you find interesting displayed through a drawing. Wearing a fur suit is no different than wearing a costume, it doesn't take over as some sort of other identity or living in a fantasy world. In addition to that, not nearly all furries dress up as their fursona, as fur suits are very expensive and not easy to make. Being a furry does not mean that you are sexually attracted to anthro characters or that you are living in a fantasy world. It only means that you find anthro animals interesting.

Isn't there an element of self deception in imagine that one is something one is not?

Being devoted to God involves a sometimes painful level of self honesty.

As to what is involved in being a " fury " I am totally ignorant.

How is it self deception?

How is it self deception?
As I said, an element.
How? By the images 8n ones imagination being moved/actualized in ones physical life.

Dressing up is harmless, until the fantasy starts to become reality.
As I said there is an element of self deception, it depends whether one knows this is make believe or starts thinking it is more than that.

God made you to find your identity in your relationship to Him as your Creator, God, King and Father. He wants you to define and shape your conception of yourself within what He says is the Truth about you as His child. Anything that interferes with this or contradicts what He says your identity is, must be rejected. Why? Because to adopt a view of yourself, to form some part of your identity separate from, or in denial of, what God says is the Truth about you is to embrace a lie, an illusion, that can only move you away from God and the life He made for you to enjoy with Himself. And the only other direction from God you can go is always toward darkness and destruction.

When people so identify with an animal that they take up wearing a costume in mimicry of that animal, they are degrading themselves, admiring a lesser creature than themselves and attempting, in a silly way, to be like it. But God wants His children to be more and more like Jesus, not a cat, or bunny rabbit, or wolf.

Romans 8:29
29 For whom he [God] did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

2 Corinthians 4:6-11
6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.
8 We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair;
9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;
10 always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies.
11 For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.

2 Corinthians 3:18
18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

Jesus is the Ultimate Being and as such deserves to be the Christian's "Great Obsession," their daily preoccupation that overtakes every area of their living. Is this what you're doing? Are you living before God every day, obsessed, not with animals, but with the Creator and God of All Things? This is what you were made for.
