Christian & Heavy Metal Drummer

I have seen several of these (rock music) threads floating around, asking if such and such type of music is a sin, satanic, evil, etc. The answer to that question is defined by what the musicians are doing with their music.

If the band claims to be a Christian band, is "preaching the word" through song, and is making a "joyful noise unto the Lord," then who are we to judge them? Who are we to say their music is or is not joyful or sinful. Just because you personally do not like it does not make it wrong in the eyes of God. If God gave them the talent to play and they are using that talent to reach others through music ministry, more power to them.

Am I, who was influenced by rock and heavy metal growing up, supposed to settle for a small, simple, non-abrasive drumset so I can conform to what someone else THINKS? To even suggest so is ludicrous. Unless you are God, you can't tell me what to play or not to play, if the music and message is our way of spreading the word of Jesus Christ our savior.

God gave me a gift of music and being able to play the drums. I will gladly continue to beat the snot out of a TAMA Starclassic 9-piece double bass kit with a wrap-around set of Sabian AA & AAX cymbals mounted to a half rack.

If it takes playing fast and heavy to break through some barriers and reach some of those "lost sheep" that are headed down a path of sin, so be it. Who are you to judge me?

I don't see people griping about the piano being used during worship. It wasn't around during the time of Jesus either.

Keep this in mind: "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor." If you spread lies or false propaganda, you are guilty of breaking one of His commandments.

Proud to be a Christian & heavy metal drummer!

:amen

I play TAMA's I use dual bass pedals I use a Gibraltar rack, I use AA's, AAX and HHX cymbals, and I have 2 Zildjan china's one is a 10 and one is a 16 inch, and I have a 18 inch Sabian china also. I use a 5 peace set with Evans G2's on the toms and a Aquarian super 2 on the snare, I also use 3 ROTO toms. I have pictures of my set somewhere in this forum, I forgot where they are. And I am in a Funk band right now. But I still play Heavy Metal, Fusion, plain Rock, and R&B. But one thing I have to get, and that is a bass drum woofer. And also check out Billy Cobham's bass drum woofers below. And below all that a friend of mine just got these dual Mapex pedals, I use dual Mapex pedals but they are not like these. they are 1,200 bucks.

I agree with John's agreeing 100% :D

Rock on dudes! BTW, for you drummers, the new Transatlanic album I think is great, going to see them in Philly. Portnoy at his best IMO. And lyrically, the gospel is there (though in a subtle way) courtesy of Neil Morse. This is a great example of a band that doesn't call itself Christian, but is honoring the Lord. More progressive than metal mind you but nonetheless.

Mike Portnoy (from Dream Theater) is one of my biggest influences. I have been a DT fan for almost 2 decades now. It is interesting that originally they were going to be called "Majesty," but the name was already taken and there were copyright issues. They did a song in honor of their Majesty namesake called Ytse Jam as an instrumental (majesty spelled backwards). If you listen to their words carefully, you can most definitely catch subtle undertones of Christianity.

Other noteable influences would include Lars Ulrich, Dave Lombardo, Tommy Lee, Tommy Aldridge, Steve Wacholz, Jeff Plate, Neil Peart, and Eric Carr.

Nothing against the small set, light music guys but...the rockers can play circles around you! :eyebrow

Thanks for making me feel old (I have no idea who they are). :sad

Back in my day...
John Bonham, Bill Ward, Neil Peart, and for me especially Bill Bruford of Yes/King Crimson.

I'm not a drummer though, but I know what I like.

I'm a drummer as well. (WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO :D)

I agree 100% with Dude Named Louis's agreeing 100% with John's agreeing 100% with CDF.
