Christian Hip Hop

I don't like rap or hip hop, but I found some Christian "hip hop" that I feel has good lyrics. And since I don't like rap, I don't think of it as rap but as spoken word poetry with rhythm. :)

It began when I was searching for music to listen to. My repentant heart wanted to hear a song about Psalm 51, so I typed "Psalm 51" into Spotify and found Timothy Brindle.

Tell me what you think.

Timothy Brindle - Psalm 51

Here is a bit from the lyrics:

This sheep has gone astray on an evil rotten way (Isaiah 53:6)
The grief has brought dismay, I need to stop and pray! (Psalm 32:3-5)
My sweetness is sour, I'm weak in my power (1 Cor. 12:10)
I'm doubting Thomas (John 20:25) combined with Peter the coward (Mark 14:66-72)
If saints were tried, to see if we're sanctified
I'd of disgracefully walked the plank and died
And if Your standard was the Sears Tower-
I fell short of Your Glory by the 40th story (Romans 3:23)
Your Law convicts me (Rom. 3:20),
but You have awesome pity (Psalm 86:5)
I'm forgiven, even when my paws are sticky
Everyone's sauced and tipsy, it's awful risky
Living in this modern Sodom (Gen. 18:20)-- it's Gotham City
I don't deserve to be blessed, I squirm to wrestle
this earthly vessel, Determined to murder my flesh (Romans 8:13)
I've forsaken You, I lie and say it's true
But You're faithful to forgive (1 John 1:9) so this praise is due!

Timothy Brindle ft. Shai Linne

We thank God He chose us/ We’re Justified through Faith/
And not the Law of Moses/
Because Christ fulfilled it/
On behalf of us/
The Father’s wrath was Just/
When Christ was smashed and crushed/ Some try to ignore that the salvation of the worst/
Was decided before the foundation of the earth/
God’s prior election/ is not just fire protection/
The Messiah’s reflection/
Will change your entire direction/
Read the inspired text, He requires perfection/
Keep fighting the Blessed Son?/
And you might be the next one/
To get blasted/
Bashed in/
Mashed in/
Crashed in/
The fattest gas mask can’t withstand The Lamb’s wrath, kid!/
The Nazarene/
Will smash your spleen/
You’ll be mashed and creamed/
When His wrath is steamed/
So acknowledge your sin/
And start following Him/
Or you’ll be hollow within/
And then swallowed and pinned/
Hey, truthfully,/
We’re depraved too, you see/
But a Great Jew/Came through/To save you and me!/

Shai Linne - Election

Some people say that we were drowning in the ocean
Barely floating until God threw us the rope then
Our free will helped us as we groped
Our faith is the hand that grabbed the rope and God put us back in the boat
Nope! Without apology I deny that analogy
Reality- we were dead at the bottom of the sea
I was a swollen corpse with hope no more
Until Jehovah the LORD dove from the shore to the ocean floor
Yeah, I was a corpse and I smelled like it
I’ll keep it simple, why did God choose me? Because He felt like it!

Beautiful exile dial tone

We're part of a culture that really loves to hate us
Every chance they get they attempt to isolate and debate us
It's not that they don't like us, its just they don't like God in us
It's common knowledge and Oddly enough, it makes a lot of sense to a lot of us,

Artists: Timothy Brindle, Shai Linne, Propaganda, Stephen the Levite, Beautiful Eulogy.

You can change the words but it's still rap.
Perhaps. I can't stand rap, but this music I like. It's more so the "spoken word" aspect I like.

Spoken word like:

It's different that rap to me because rap doesn't compare to the poetic level this is. Plus, it's a little more deep than a lot of contemporary music I feel. But that's me.

I'm not a fan.

IF the lyrics of some music can make it bad ( i believe it does) the the lyrics of some music can make it good...

I don't listen to songs for the words, I listen for the music. For me personally, all Rap is the same. The beat is the same. The only thing different is the lyrics. It's like listening to the same song over and over. It gets old really fast.

But as I said, it's just personal preference.

sort of, yes. the origin of the music and lyrics is what determines if it's life or death. if it's born of the flesh, it's flesh and profits nothing. if it's origin is from God, then it's good, and may be enjoyed. David WIlkerson spent a decade , I think, looking into this prayerfully, at first rejecting bad music, then thinking some of it may be okay so trying to allow it, then seeing what effect it had on people, and still prayerfully, he had to drop it like any other sin and wrote about it in some of his books - his struggle with it and God's Revelation and Scripture and the Results.

btw, the churches in russia over a decade ago .... well, that's for another thread... ( :) later maybe)

What music would you say is born from God or not? Would you say there are bad genres, or just bad messages?

I mean there's Toby Mac, a Christian artist who sings:

Ill-M-I, Ill-M-I, Ill-M-I, Ill-M-I and you
Illuminati comin' through
Ill-M-I, Ill-M-I, Ill-M-I, Ill-M-I and you
Illuminati comin' through
Flow like the Cassius, swing like the Clay
One day, I'm'a make the whole world pay
With k.o.'s and okay we bash clots-n-dot-dash
You got that right, I'm'a rock the Morse code tonight
Transmit 'n throwin' fits 'n paparazzi like zits
Get flipped out and squeezed fresh like juicy sun kissed
And if I miss with my missles you're still gonna sizzle
'Cause I frizzle fry radiation style worldwide.

(And his explanation for "illuminati" in his song is just as silly as this song)

Only hip-hop I really listen to is Family Force 5 and TobyMac. (Both Christian.) But not consistently. I'm more into rock.

I agree with David Wilkerson (not a cop out, but he is much better known for his testimony , power to heal drug addicts and prostitutes (very many over decades) by God's leading , and his wisdom.)
And the churches in russia.
there are whole areas of never good music. it's not a place here to debate it (too open to the public, which never agrees with God).
the rest of Wilkerson's testimony and ministry, the work God did through him to reach many thousands, is well known and I think readily available in the untied states online and bookstores and even yard sales(treasure hunt for Bible believing people).

doesnt read very christian to me...
Not sure what song he quoted up above, but it's not at all typical of TobyMac. At least from the songs I know by him.
TobyMac was originally part of a group from the '90s called DC Talk. They did the song "Jesus Freak".

The second part of my post was deleted. It had a wiki article about Mozart who wrote a classical piece and the lyrics and original title were inappropriate.

I was trying to make the point of the style of music that can be called good can have bad lyrics and vice versa.

psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs may be good.(as it is written we are to share one with another as God gives them to us).
almost nothing in the world is good.(remember, bad source)

pretty simple.

Music is a subject that has been discussed at length in the past. :) I grew up in a family where only traditional music was accepted, so I'm well aware of this position.

The second part of my post was deleted. It had a wiki article about Mozart who wrote a classical piece and the lyrics said "".

That's probably because there are children that read these posts and it is a Christian website.

You should edit your post.
