Christian Music vs. Worldly Music

There is a difference from worship to appreciating or admire. Am i not allowed to admire someone for there talent?. Even christian bands with christian lyrics people still obviously enjoy the music for the lyrics or rhythem, beat or whatever else.

Some lyrics dont even say anything bad at all. Not like every bands lyrics are negative or anything. What path can a standard band take someone down?

With most bands i listen to i put it into the ay i want to belive it is put out. Everything in general can mean different things. Thats the problem. Even just something we might say on the internet. If you dont put happy or sad face at the end it could be taken many ways. Are they ngry?. Are they happy?
Yeah. The problem is when it becomes an actual obsession, is what I meant. I think you can even form a sort of addiction, if you feed the obsession too much.

farouk Yes, but certain lyrics lead us down certain paths, as in the wrong path, away from God. We end up worshiping idols. I've been there farouk, I know what I'm talking about. For example, I'm 32 years old and I've seen artists come and go in my own heart. The way I see it, those artists never loved me through their lyrics like Jesus does through the lyrics of a Holy Spirit filled artist. So if I can teach a 19 year old that it would be better for your 'conscience' not to follow worldly writers and musicians, why would that be a bad thing. We can't make up their minds, but we can point them in the right direction when it comes to music. Besides, doesn't God the Father know what's best for our spirit/mind/souls.

urk:

I think I follow what you're saying; but the conscience is important.

Blessings.

I'd ask myself, "Do I still enjoy listening to it?" If so, keep them. Of course, if the message is against your beliefs or if it simply makes you uncomfortable, then get rid of them. We are told not to love the world, nor the things in it. I don't recall the Bible saying don't have them or even enjoy them.

Personally, I gave many of my old CDs away, but kept some of them. I rarely listen to them these days, because I enjoy Gospel music much more. It was a matter of my tastes changing. I liked someones comment that some "worldly" music does have a Christian message. I feel that way about Elton John's "I'm Still Standing". No mention of Jesus at all, but the theme applies to Christians.

Over the past year, I have thrown out some artists because of beliefs. My collection is getting smaller and smaller. questdriven does have a point about addiction. It never got to the point where I was worshiping or obsessed with worldly artists. At least, I can honestly say that, haha. You guys bring up some good points. Again, tossing all my cd's would be a most radical decision that I'm not quite ready to do yet. Angel yeah that concert was pretty awesome, only a shadow..blessings, love.

@farouk You could also look at it from this perspective..say you lose all your cd's in a fire or they are stolen, what cd's would you re-buy.

;)

If you feel there is no idolatry or obsession involved then why throw it away at all? I can see how one wouldn't want to listen to music that worships Satan or promotes sin. But on the other hand there is a lot of worldly music that does neither of those things.

Also, you have been collecting those things for half of your lifetime now, right? So even if you don't want to listen to them any more because you can no longer relate to the lyrics that collection is still part of your life's story. It once used to mean a lot to you.
Now this is not a biblical advise, but it's my experience that for our sanity we need to treat our past, even the things we regret, with respect and kindness. It's a part of loving ourselves, which is, accoring to Jesus, second only to loving God. Of course we should discontinue sin, but keeping your collection just for the sake of the memories doesn't sound like much of a sin. So instead of throwing them away why not put them in a box and store them in your basement?

BY FAR, one of the hardest decisions I will ever have to make. Do I throw away my worldly album collection, or do I keep it. I'm 32. I started this collection when I was 16, so...it would be a pretty radical move on my behalf. What does God say, this is frustrating. I need to hear from my brothers and sisters..

Hello urk,

Speaking for myself, totally eliminating all worldly entertainment: music, movies, etc., was that which initiated my desire to be in complete obedience to God, and to be totally immersed in His Word. And that effort was not of my own doing, but was according to His work; He caused me to do it! (Ezekiel 36:24-27). His people (Ephesians 1:4) will withdraw themselves from the world's music, media, entertainment, et all (1 John 2:15-16.); and separate themselves from the filth of this world (2 Corinthians 6 :17; Revelation 18:4); because He has ordained that they will (Ephesians 2:10), so that they stay in prayer and praise all day long
(1 Thessalonians 5:17; Isaiah 26:3; Romans 8:15; Galatians 4:6; Romans 8:16).

1 John 5:19-20: And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness. And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
