Christmas" sign causes controversy

It seems so obvious to me...there is no constitutional "right" or "protection" for freedom from religion.

Just the opposite, in fact...the constitution protects the right of freedom of religion.

The FFR group is really grasping at straws and technicalities to prove their point. I don't care about the sign personally. It is a part of our culture and it really isn't doing anything. I actually like Christmas trees, carols (even some religious ones, come all ye faithful is still one of my favorite songs, even though I'm not religious) The FFR do have a point that it is a public street, but its a very long stretch and is just going to make them look like whiny babies. I also have no problem with the fire department hanging the sign. Chances are its volunteers so the tax payers aren't paying for them anyway. Oh well. Anyone want to have some coco? *hands out piping hot coco* :D

The FFR makes itself look bad with its whingeing about a sign. It is no small wonder why many folks don't like atheists. They would have a better reputation if many of their number didn't whine so much.

Absolutely ridiculous! Where on earth do the FFR think the word CHRISTmas comes from? People like that give atheists a bad name.

If they don't like CHRISTmas let them put up their own sign wishing people a 'Happy Yuletide' or 'Merry Saturnalia'.

I agree Aardvark.

Atheists have put up signs and banners and buy ads on buses that say things like, "Celebrate Reason this Season" and "Celebrating Our Constitution keeping Church and State separate since 1787"...

...and I don't have a problem with that.

Some Christians do, and the newspapers love to print angry responses by some Christians who complain when these kinds of signs pop up. But, I believe those Christians are very shortsighted...we should be the first to support the freedom of all to express their beliefs in displays...since we want the freedom to express ours.

"I believe in freedom of religion like anyone else, it's just that, most people would, you know, find it offensive because, if they're Muslim or any other race, like I am, I'm an atheist..."

That guy had me cracking up! :toofunny

Even the Nazis celebrated Christmas! What gives!?

I've never understood this idea that Hitler was not a Christian. He always claimed to be a Christian in his speeches.

Quite obviously he was not a good Christian but why do people say he was not a Christian at all? It's rather like saying that Osama bin Laden was not a Muslim.

For clearly obvious reasons. Why someone would question that is quite astounding actually. And no, it is not at all "like saying that Osama bin Laden was not a Muslim." Hitler is the quintessential example that claiming to be a Christian does not mean that one actually is a Christian. But, if I am not mistaken, history also shows that he had many influences and his beliefs were quite syncretistic.

If you cannot understand why Christians say Hitler was not a Christian, then you clearly do not understand Christianity.

But let's not get sidetracked. That is for another topic.
