I recently watched a video on handicapped people and this is my thoughts on the matter.
Gratitude. If there is one word that could describe the strongest emotion I felt while watching this one hour film it is Gratitude. First, I feel gratitude to God that I was not born with such a tremendous trial like having no arms and legs. In fact, when I was born I came out feet first and the lack of oxygen made doctors 90 percent sure that I would have brain damage like cerebral palsy! Just like what the married woman Samantha had in the video!
For whatever reason, God has spared me from having to deal with a trial such as this and for that I am grateful. Secondly I feel grateful to the many people that serve people with disabilities even though it is a hard job with little pay and even less recognition. They are the true heroes of this world.
The third reason I am grateful has to do with the challenged individuals themselves. They have courage that defies the mind. To live a life of utter dependency has to take real guts. Never fitting in, not having the option to have a family you could take care of, not even being able to drive are all sacrifices that take real heart to confront and still have any semblance of happiness.
Gratitude, this emotion must be felt and learned from in another way. If I was spared a fate such as this there must be a reason behind it. Thinking of Matt 25, I ponder of when Christ describes the True Saints of the world as being the servants of the unfortunate, and it makes it all too clear that able bodied Christians are to lead a life of servitude for the blessed as well as the cursed.
In my own personal life my fiancée is afflicted with Ulcerative Colitis. This is a condition that is so hard it borders on “handicapâ€Â. I pray that I have the courage, patience, and ability to confront this problem in a manner that is pleasing to God and helpful for my suffering girlfriend. This video has helped put it all back into perspective for me and I feel I know more clearly how I am going to tackle my own issues with “disabilitiesâ€Â.
There is so much to learn from people that are different from us especially in the way of lacking abilities. Being mindful of people such as this will put us back into a consciousness of compassion and understanding that Christ would want for us. For a one hour video, this expose is rich in Godly Truths.
