Church before the New Testament

Just curious what "bible only believers" feel about the church coming first before the bible. Jesus said to Peter "Peter, on this rock you will start my church". He didn't say "Peter, on this rock you will write a bible".
"Bible only believers" feel they must ONLY go by the bible, but Calvin and Luther went on to writing creeds in addition to the bible.
What happened to all those people who went by Oral Tradition instead of the bible, because the bible wasn't printed until many years later? Were they all doomed to hell? I think the good Lord would never allow that to happen.
Show me in the bible, the verse that says Jesus said go by the bible and the bible only?
Just isn't so...

You are correct. "Sola Scriptura" is un-scriptual, ironically. Jesus said "I will build my Church", and on the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended and gave the apostles strength to begin their mission. The Church began fulfilling its mandate at that point, before Saul became Paul and wrote anything. The Bible's place is within the bosom of the Church, in Her Liturgy.

Hello my brother in Christ. Yes, and that is why we have an unbroken link from 2,000 years until now of apostolic succession. No one else can claim that. :-D

Yep. We better not make this too Catholic of a thread though, or else old "vic" will swoop down and paste our posts in the oblivion of the RCC section.

Well, to be Catholic is deepin history, is theology, and this is the correct section to post.
There is no such thing as 'too Catholic' because it is what it is.

Yea, I get ya, but notice how no one here posted? Sometimes the truth is a little too hard to take.. ;-)

firstly, I DO BELIEVE that if you have decided to offer an item concerning the CC that it is SUPPOSE to be placed in the PROPER forum.

But if the mods are so inclined I'm sure they'll move it.

The ORIGINAL church was NOT formed IN ROME. The ORIGINAL Church was formed IN Israel. That the RCC has attempted to FOOL other peoples into a false belief that THEY ARE THE ORIGINAL CHURCH is nothing but UTTER foolishness.

For The Church is NOT some 'funky building' full of goofy hats, but the BODY of Christ; Those that follow Christ and His Commandments. Has NOTHING to do with those in ROME or China or ANYWHERE ELSE. And it is NOT confinded to a 'bunch of voodoo type rituals' full of idolotry and the like.

So, your attempt to fire up some silly debate on such an issue is simply an attempt at causing dissention. Give it up.

Funny, Imagician, you will be the one to 'fire it up' with your accusations against the church Jesus founded. The whole world was Catholic before Luther came and changed it in 1517. There were no Protestants whatsoever before then. St. Ignatius called the church "Catholic" in the year 107 because it means 'universal'.
You cannot deny Scripture when Jesus told Peter to start his CHURCH. Jesus Told him "WHATEVER YOU LOOSE WILL BE LOOSED IN HEAVEN, WHATEVER YOU BOUND SHALL BE BOUND IN HEAVEN". Therefore, Jesus is giving Peter AUTHORITY for his church and we have an unbroken link for 2,000 years. 265 popes later NEVER BROKEN. Makes sense to me...

That is true, but the "where" is irellevant. Its the "who" that is important. And Peter is "who" Christ chose to be pastor of his flock. The fact that his ministry ended up in Rome is just the way it goes.
