That's what makes a good story in my opinion.
Seen Breaking Bad? The lead character is a nice guy gradually becoming bad. But his original motive was just to make enough money for his family to have a better life. To provide better. So he becomes a drug dealer. Unethical yes but the gradual process makes it believable.
Interesting people are a mix of good and evil. Not totally bad or good.
