OK...just wanted to hear some ideas on this concept.
I wanted to flesh out some ideas that we all have about this concept.
Now in the New Testament corporate guilt was fairly heavy handed...often the innocent would get caught up and pay for the sins of the collective. Caleb and Joshua had to wander around in the wilderness for forty years instead of getting to go into the Promised Land simply because no one would believe them. Caleb got a much better trophy than Joshua did IMHO.
When Jesus was in his ministry most people never recognized him for the real Messiah. They thought that the Messiah would be a conquering hero and military leader. And as such the whole nation had to pay the price in 70 AD....and during the Spanish Inquisition and the holocaust and at other times.
But...I want to say that often I am with the ones who are wrong too. There are times that I go along with the crowd when it determines that things are good to do. And there are instances that the collective wisdom is absolutely nuts too. Such as things concerning children. The Government says that if you spank your children you just might get them taken away from you and be charged with assault...but if you abort your unborn child you are an intelligent person making good choices.
But then it comes to times when the Baptists lobbied our Government to keep interracial marriage from becoming a reality. They also spearheaded the Prohibition period in our history which led to the likes of Al Capone rising to power.
The heart is deceitful above all else.
But we have scripture to set things straight....but then how did the Israelites miss their Messiah. (except for 200+) How did the Baptists find the reason for segregation? How did the Southern States find a license to condone and endorse Slavery? Will the Baptists ever admit that Adoniram Judson was not the first missionary while George Lyle (a black man) actually was? He had to cozy up to the British in order to escape the Colonists who wanted to re-enslave him. Adoniram was a miserable failure as a missionary while George created hundreds of congregations.
I wonder what our blatant and miserable mistake is these days. What "elephant in the room" are we missing today? Are we hurdling and helping the end of the world with our theology in some fashion of what we think is right? The price is going to be high. Sure, no one snowflake feels responsible for the avalanche...but the town is destroyed anyway.
