Bible Study Covenants

There are Seven great Covenants of God that disclose His whole purpose for His earthly creation. Six of them are unconditional. In those six, God says,"I will," meaning, He will bring them to completion in spite of mans untrustworthy and evil nature. But one of the seven Covenants is "conditional". It is called the "Mosaic Covenant" Or in the NT it is called the "Old Covenant or "the first covenant" (Heb. 8: 7). What makes the Mosaic Covenant conditional is that God says "if you will", because man said they would. That made it conditional. (Ex. 19:8)
The covenant was formed in (Ex. 19: 3-8). God reminds Moses of by His grace, how He brought them out of Egypt as on eagles wings unto Himself (Ex. 19:4). God then tells Israel what He expects of His people, and instead of asking to continue in God's grace, they say,"all that the Lord has spoken, we will do" (Ex. 19: 5-8). Thus, "The Law" (Ex. 20: 1-17). The Ten Commandments was first because since man decided to obey God by the strength of the flesh, God gives them His moral standards that will convict them of sin, that brings death and destruction upon the sinner. For before the Law, men were not convicted of the evil that they would do. They felt free to do what ever they decided to do without guilt. (Rom. 7:7-14).
The Mosaic Covenant is the first kingdom covenant of a chosen people as promised to Abraham (Gen. 12: 2-3). That is why it is called the first covenant in the NT. It is the first covenant of the Kingdom under God.(Ex. 19: 5-6). The Mosaic Covenant is wholly of Law: The moral law (Ten Commandments),The law of the priesthood and sacrifices and the law of the temple structure and it's similitude of the heavenly temple. All of this covenant of law was a system and a shadow of future things to come. The first part of the covenant , The Ten commandments purpose was to condemn sin in sinful man. The rest of the covenant was looking forward to the mercy of the Lord through the Levitical Priesthood. While the blood of animals only covered (atoned) their sins, they looked forward to the promised redeemer, who would take them completely away. For the priestly functions and sacrifices never took away a guilty conscience. For their sins were remembered from sacrifice to sacrifice, looking forward to the redeemer (Heb. 9: 1-15) The Book of Hebrews is not about the Ten Commandments, it is about the law of the Mosaic priesthood and Tabernacle, in which Christ replaced, not made by hands but eternal in the heavens. With an eternal High priest. Christ is the reality of the type, given by God in the Mosaic Covenant or First Covenant. That is why the New Covenant is better and replaces the first covenant, because it is the fulfillment of the promises of God in reality.
