I was just wondering, during the national (and probably global at this point) lock down, do you think that the crime rate has declined or escalated? On one hand, you're forcing people to stay at home and off the streets, but on the other hand if somebody is a criminal anyways, then it would only make sense if they would rebel. I'm sort of on the fence on this one so I really can't say. :/

Criminals right now are in the lime light...they stand out like sore thumbs because of the reduced traffic.
They are getting caught.

OTOH
Domestic disputes are up. Tempers due to frustration adds to the mix. Financial worries and lousy economy aren't helping.

Drugs (except for prescription) are running scarce because of the sealed borders. No traffic coming and going is making it easy to spot the mules carrying drugs. Especially narcotics and opiates.

Alcoholics are caught easily... marijuana users are especially prevalent because of the states that have legalized it. And because of this the wrecks and deaths they cause are spectacular.
They are not getting out any time soon.

But they are letting some violent criminals out of jail...why is beyond me.

Really? I thought that it was just the non-violent ones that they were letting out of jail. At least around where I live. That other stuff that you mentioned makes perfect sense to me though. There might be more people trying to commit crime, but they are being caught a lot easier for it.

The closures of the meat processing plants caught my attention. Could we be in need of a firearm? We're getting more serious about purchasing a shotgun. It's not a matter of if anymore but when. There is a possibility we may purchase a PC-9 carbine instead. At any rate we agree no hand guns unless things really get bad enough to justify it. I've insisted if we do find we need handguns then only revolvers and no semis. As of right now we still own no firearms.

You won't need them...
Society is not collapsing. Police aren't abandoning their posts...stores still have food (even with wholesale hoarding)

Food, clothing, and shelter is still plentiful...as well as tons of entertainment materials.

Guns are more of a potential problem maker than a potential problem solver. (Running afoul of laws unknowingly)

I largely agree. I just remember Katrina had a total collapse of societal norms in N.O. and the police abandoned ship. Being on an Island, the supply chain remaining unbroken is crucial. Hungry peeps do desperate things. It's a tough decision each must make for their own families. I had a right-to-carry so I'm well acquainted with gun laws/responsibility(one reason I said no pistols) so the thing I'm most concerned with is my son and wife not having adequate experience.

Many numbers are saying crime rates are plummeting. Many shops and banks are closed; fewer opportunitues for theft. Some boating areas are a no go and transportation has slowed...probably making smuggling drugs and human trafficking or smuggling difficult. If you are out of your home, you stick out.

Makes sense.

How is everything closed and no one around less opportunities for theft?.

Less stores to rob would be less opportunity. Not saying it completely eradicates theft. I would think if a thief only preferred to rob jewelry stores or banks at gun point, he may have a harder time with it right now. If people are questioned every time they leave their home that may cause criminals to be extra cautious as they don't want to stick out or get caught.

They could break into a business with locked doors, of course, but the fact no one is supposed to be out and about in many areas and police are patrolling, it could deter thieves. Some probably don't want to break into locked shops because it can leave too much evidence and would rather rob with a weapon on hand to grab and go. It depends on the method of operation they follow.

It would be interesting to see the crime stats over the last month, I might go have a look, then again I'm not a fan of statistics as they can always be twisted and then there are the cases that are not reported like maybe some domestic violence, petty theft and do on.

Here in Pennsylvania since March
Total arrest down 76%
Property crimes down 91%
Total crashes down 75%
DUI's down 71%

Property crimes would be down if people are forced to stay home, and crashes as not as many people on the roads. Why are DUI down they probably not even testing people at the moment, like here I went through a road block and they were more interested in why I was travelling, usually that would be a breath test and licence check.

Total arrests down as they probably focusing more on people staying home that crime.

What are the other crime stats, I know here domestic violence rose high.

Although I realize that this is for a different cause,.. what else is new?

Talking about crime here is some good news. Well done to Sudan for coming out of the savage stone age practice of FGM.

What really surprises me though is the fact that a lot of crime has apparently dropped. I mean that's not really all that surprising in one sense cause of what JohnDB said about there being less traffic,.. but there's also a lot less people out and about to stop it and report it.

Power is out again...
This year is shaping up to be horrible.
Between tornados and spring storms taking out our power to quarantines....

Sorry to hear that. Where are you getting internet at now then?

Over the past two decades, crime rates have fallen dramatically. Mostly, I think because the proportion of young male adults has fallen. They commit most of the crime, and fewer of them has meant fewer crimes. The last few years, there's been a bit of an uptick, but nothing like the drop we had since the 1980s.
