A recent article in the New York Times suggested that western culture is losing its appeal among third world nations and nations which do not fall under the American definition of 'free people'. I suspect the observation is a bit overdue because America lost its cultural attraction years ago. Secret prisons, torture and unjust military invasion of more than one hundred nations will do that. They hate us because we meddle, not because we are free.

Freedom is a relative term, since even Communist nations hold elections. American culture is actually less 'free' than those on the unapproved list. The US has more people in prison (over a million) than any other nation and is preeminent among the family of nations in its domestic spying activities and financial enslavement of its own people. Politically this is common knowledge. What is not common is the application of a standard of cultural values.

Ever heard of the Jewish canary? Watch its health. It will tell you a lot about American culture.

"The reason the Russian people suffered so much was because they forgot God."
- Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

This is a religious site, therefore the nature of discussion is flavored with religious overtones. The examination of changing American culture requires an external reference in order to gauge its value and progress or degeneration as the case may be. Since the Bible and traditional Christian values are in general disfavor, I suggest we consider the Jewish canary.

In the early days of mining when men dug coal and minerals out of the ground, a canary was often carried down into the pits with the miners. The canary is sensitive to toxic fumes and as long as the birds were healthy, the miners could be confident that they could work in safety. If the canary became sick or died, then appropriate action was taken to insure the health and continuation of work. Jews consider themselves to be a cultural canary.

A nations' attitude toward Jews and the modern State of Israel is a measure of cultural values. If the people of a nation are favorably disposed toward seeking God and doing His will, then the Jew is treated well and the State of Israel is supported and respected. The Jewish canary is healthy and sings.

However, when a nations' culture disintegrates into apathy, moral licentiousness and political debauchery the national attitude as well as policy becomes increasingly unfriendly towards the State of Israel and the Jew. In its extremity, domestic persecution of individual Jews becomes overt and national policy towards the State of Israel becomes hostile. The Jewish canary sickens and dies.

I invite the reader to cite specific cultural changes in the USA that are not healthy and do not contribute to the general prosperity of the citizenry.....or good ones if you find them. It should be remembered, however, that the Jewish canary is a good benchmark for comparison.

Since the Bible is increasingly out of favor with the people of America, the Jewish canary remains as one true test of cultural values. Watch the Jewish canary.......

It is an interesting assertion, but I don't believe you've provided any actual evidence for the idea of a Jewish canary as it relates to the righteousness of a culture.
