Help! :praying

Okay, I have more than one question about this verse (Dan 8:26): :confused

Which is the correct translation 'evening and the morning' or 'evenings and mornings' (plural or single?)

Next question:

Is the 'vision' sealed up or the 'meaning of the vision' ? :confused
(What I'm asking is do we know what the vision is?)

Dan 8:26
And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told [is] true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it [shall be] for many days. (KJV)

Dan 8:26
"And the vision of the evenings and mornings Which was told is true; Therefore seal up the vision, For [it refers] to many days [in the future]." (NKJV)

The vision is what was spoken in that scripture. The evening and mornings = 2300. 2300-167BC = 2133AD.

I think it is evening and morning and encompasses the whole period. He speaks of it as one event although it is over a long period of time.

  • Daniel 8:27 And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king's business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it.

The vision of that prophecied time was "shut up" and "none understood" so I believe it is the "meaning of the vision." The vision, as explained by Gabriel, had to do with Iran (Medes and Persia), Greece (Alexander the Great) [8:20-22], who I believe, were types for today. But, the vision goes to the end of days...

  • Daniel 8:23-25 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up. And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people. And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.

I believe the above means (and believe me I am open to correction :yes ) the following....

At the end of days a king will stand. I believe the "king" represents the one world system and is already rising to his full height. That system, king, is the first beast of [Revelation 13:1]. (He/it) (is/will be) very powerful but "not by his own power," for "the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority." [Revelation 13:2]

That king/beast political system will "destroy wonderfully" by "peace." Sort of like our present administration is destroying us. With a so very loving and let's take care of the world policy. His/it's policies will cause "craft to prosper," meaning.....

  • Craft #4820 ~ mirmah; from 7411 in the sense of deceiving; fraud; craft, deceit, false, feigned, guile, subtilly, treachery.

So the deceitful, treacherous policies of the beast will destroy the "mighty and holy people," God's children...not only through taxation, usury and taking freedom away but by the second beast, the religious beast. Many will fall for the deception of that second beast who will pretend to be Christ. He is the beast that "shall magnify himself in his heart," as described in....

  • 11 Thessalonians 2:3-4 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition, Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the Temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

WW,

"The son of peridition."

Judas the treasurer of the church. Professed more concern for the poor than for the Lord's body.

The beast out of the abyss goes into perdition.

The man of sin in 2 Thessalonians 2.

This religious state of mind is presently active and powerful in this present evil world. The love of collecting money to help the poor, in the name of Jesus; while considering it a waste to sacrifice for the anointing of the Lord's Body.

And we are the body of the Lord. The following verse came to mind when reading your post....

  • John 12:8 For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always
.

So much is done in His name....Again, another verse comes to mind:

  • Matthew 24:5 For many shall come in My name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

WW,

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain. I also think the KJV 'evening and morning' is most likely the correct translation.
This king will destory many by peace', I believe that, just look at all the destruction and lives lost for the want of peace :shame

I'm lost as to the mathematical equation, sorry

Interesting, I've been looking at the Aramaic text behind this verse and the words for morning and evening appear to be singular but almost all modern translations translate it in the plural. There must be a hebrew/aramaic grammatical feature (perhaps a plural modifier) of the words that give them the meaning "mornings" and "evenings". I will keep looking into this to find out what is going on in the text because now I'm curious.

Interesting, alot of fascinating things are going on in the Daniel text! First of all the aramaic/hebrew words ereb (evening) and boqer (morning) have no gramatical plural form, thus the meaning of the words as plural must be supplied by context but is indeed possible. If the text said for example 1 "boqer" we would be obliged to translate it "1 morning", but if it read 100 "boqer" we would be obliged to translate it "100 mornings".

Now in Daniel 8:14, before the verse in question (vs. 26) the KJV reads, "And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed." However the translation of "days" is not a literal translation. As many may know the common word for "day" (from Genesis 1) is yom, but in the Hebrew/Aramaic text (shown clear as day in my KJV concordance even!) in Daniel here it says ereb-boqer or literally "evenings-mornings" or "evening-mornings", refering to spans of time in terms of evening and morning. The NKJV even translates it "days" but the NASB and NIV translate it "2,300 evenings and mornings". The numerical reading in the text of 2,300 demands that ereb and boqer must be translated as plurals. This is the same pair of words found in Daniel 8:26, therefore the proper translation is "evenings and mornings" in verse 26 and is refering to the 2300 evenings and mornings mentioned in verse 14! Mystery solved - at least from a grammar/literature stand point.

No problem. That was fun to me! :D I love doing word studies. I hope to formally begin to learn to read Biblical Hebrew (although I already can read some) next year when I go to a local divinity school. That was educational to me that some words don't have plural forms. Huh...

God Bless,

~Josh
