What can really make someone decline in his/her walk with the Lord?

What ,in this case, is "declining"? And, what would be the opposite.... and how would it be determined?

losing, or even never having to start with, a "first love" for Him - lack total devotion and total dependency on Him. (i.e. trusting any 'other')

Turning back to ones old ways. If I start doing my own will instead of the Lord's often enough I could decline in my walk with the Lord. Less prayer and studying of the Word would also be a factor.

I believe your last sentence is the main problem why many decline in the walk. However what are the causes? Why the lack of interest or prayerlessness? It is not something that just happens overnight

I can see this happening, but I would think that the Holy Spirit would eventually make a believer feel very uncomfortable being in this position.
I know some in churches that are always the same baby Christian. So how about them? They don't get worse.

This passage isn't just about following false doctrines.

James 5
19 Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back,
20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.

This is my understanding anyway.
.

The bible describes some as lukewarm etc... How is that complacency?

They are neither hot nor cold. They become stagnant in their walk. If they're walking at all.

In my own experience I have usually been either hot or cold. If I ever get complacent it doesn't last long. That is the most un-comfortable place to be in my experience that is.

A Christians eyes must be fixed on Jesus who is the author and finisher of our faith - Hebrews 12:2 KJV. No word no transformation. A lot of word and you are transformed to the image of Jesus. You become what you behold. He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Romans 8:32 NKJV

Yes,if they had the Holy Spirit within them or their conscience would make them very uncomfortable. So do they really have the Holy Spirit within them?... or have they been ignoring their conscience so long that they no longer can hear it?
