Bible Study Devotionals...

As I mentioned in other posts, I'm not much of a reader. Recently this has been changing. I was wondering what devotionals you like and why?

I don't like "devotionals". Smacks of spiritual processed fast microwaveable food.

Like to get my food from the source! God's breast--the Bible!

I don't mind them because younger Christians can use them as refences and study helps. In fact, so can older Christians. you should by no means use them as the study itself.

I have used a devotional before as my only source. That just doesnt work. Study books are great help for growth, but the word of God is where we can find all we need. When God speaks to us through His word it is awesome. I am currently using my utmost for His highest. That is an awesome devotianal.

I really enjoyed "My Utmost for His Highest" by Oswald Chambers and "Devotional Classics," edited by Richard J. Foster and James Bryan Smith. Both are very good for taking Scripture, expounding it, and making it applicable to life.

Devotional of Sorts!

Did you say Devotionals?........

......What about being 'HIDDEN'? -- (like hint-hint?)....

I don't read them. I'm not even sure what they are, exactly. Are they little books given to you by your church or books you buy with a daily scripture to read and someone's commentary on that scripture? I think I saw some once at the Bible Book Store.

I'm not against them, I just don't understand why you would need them. Why not read a scripture or two and ponder it while drinking your coffee and staring up at the sky. That's what I do...and put down that Krispy Kreme. :o

I have never been able to get much into devotionals.

But I do have a few.

Are you talknig to me about being hidden? I just can't feel right about being an invisible Mod.

I heard they have an updated version of "My Utmost For His Hightest."

Part of why I didn't read it was because it was hard to understand for me.

Since I saw the discussion elsewhere about this 'Mod' thing, I was hoping/thinking it would go over into discussing 'Hidden Truth'. Though I guess I could have started a thread as well. That said --

Devotional thought for today.

  • Matthew 11:25 At that time Jesus said, "I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants.

Matthew 13:44 " The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

Devotional Thought -- for Today

Devotional Thought -- for Today

  • Ecclesiastes 9:13 .. this I came to see as wisdom ... and it impressed me.

14 There was a small city with few men in it and a great king came to it,
surrounded it and constructed large siegeworks against it.
15 But there was found in it a poor wise man and he delivered the city
by his wisdom. Yet no one remembered that poor man.
16 So I said, " Wisdom is better than strength." But the wisdom
of the poor man is despised and his words are not heeded.
17 The words of the wise heard in quietness are better than the
shouting of a ruler among fools.
18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war,
but one sinner destroys much good
    .

    NASU (emphasis added)

I like all the Devotionals written and published by Mrs.Charles Cowman (Wife of a Christian Missionary in China). They are "Streams In The Desert", "Mountain Trailways for Youth", "Springs In The Valley" and "Words of Comfort and Cheer" to name a few.

I also like Charles Spurgeon's (Prince of Preachers from England) Devotional "Faith's Checkbook". I need to read some of his other Devotionals like "Morning and Evening" too.

I have recieved tremendous comfort, encouragement and blessings by reading them.
