Romans 14:1 Means don't go around starting arguments on purpose. Especially not just for the sake of winning against easy opponents - we are to take the weaker brother (the brother with a weaker conscience) to ourselves - to embrace him -- to get our arms around him. That means: Christian, get your ego out of it. This is for our own benefit.

(this from Aesop):
THE MAN AND THE LION
A Man and a Lion traveled together through the forest. They soon began
to boast of their respective superiority to each other in strength and
prowess. As they were disputing, they passed a statue carved in stone,
which represented “a Lion strangled by a Man.†The traveler pointed to it
and said: “See there! How strong we are, and how we prevail over even the
king of beasts.†The Lion replied: “This statue was made by one of you
men. If we Lions knew how to erect statues, you would see the Man
placed under the paw of the Lion.â€Â

I agree to some extent.
However, this is assuming that this younger brother is willing to listen.
At least twice in scripture Paul called false ones out by name in his letters, and also says to sharply rebuke so that they will be sound in the faith.

There is a time for encouraging a brother....and there is a time for rebuke.
It is time for balanced doctrine in the church so that we find the truth rather than this limp wristed pacifism that demands that we all get along regardless.

Lets not preach HALF of the truth.

We should always try to take into consideration that we all have been there. We should not start to point our fingers at our weaker brothers because Jesus didn’t. always rebuke with love and stop demonizing each other.

Rebuke with love? Okay. I agree.
What about a general principle though.
How about we start to understand that meekness isn't a heinous crime and we are to encourage and build each other up (that doesn't mean tear each other down, it is polar opposite) and encourage each other. We are to tenderly love each other and commanded to love our neighbors and yea, even our enemies.

What if somebody is to try to slap us with words and call us names? Can we return blessing for cursing? What profit if we tolerate stones thrown at us for unrighteousness sake? What if we are sinning and somebody sharply rebukes us and we put up with it? Does that gain us any standing in heaven? Do we profit thereby?

I'd like to personally thank each contributor to the thread thus far and further ask the Lord to bless them mightily. Bless them in their lives, their hearts, their ministries and their relationships. I'm asking that God continue with them during times of trial and will like to hear them 'Bless God!' for the longsuffering they have been greeted with.

In principle we all should be trying to attain unity. But until we all decide that there is one gospel and its not different for each of us, we wont be able to do much more than tolerate one another. Which is quite sad.
We dont show a brother love by ignoring his error. We do him and those around him who listen to his words a serious injustice by failing to rebuke him if he fails to listen to gentle guidance.

What if somebody is to try to slap us with words and call us names?
And what if they didnt and we kept going down the path of corruption we were on ? Would that be showing us 'love' ?
Better to have my feelings hurt in the short term and steered back on the path than to be placated right into hell.

What if we are sinning and somebody sharply rebukes us and we put up with it?
If we are the one who is sinning and in the wrong then anyone who rebukes has right to do so and would be helping us by exposing our sin to us.
Does that gain us any standing in heaven? Do we profit thereby?
Do we profit by being turned from our sin by one who rebukes us ? Seriously ?

FoC?

I think it is okay for Christians to strive to love each other. Further it is undeniably true that the Bible states that love isn't expressed by a strong desire to insult others for no other purpose than the glee and secret delight a person may feel in their evil wicked heart.

Love is patient and kind. It isn't quick to put the smack down on somebody. We love the words of 1 Corinthians 13, "Love is patient, love is kind." We want to be patient and kind. But in these good intentions we end up avoiding telling people what they need to hear, telling them rather what they want to hear. But this is not love. This actually is not caring for the other person. What we ought to do is ask ourselves how we can humbly tell others what they need to hear even though they may get offended and even cut us off.

It is the "humble" part that we have to take care to have at our disposal. If we are involved in building up the body there are times when certain things must be torn down first. Still it is clear that all things must be done for edification. All things done for the real purpose of God and we can not come to a brother with a hammer in hand because that is the only tool we are comfortable with.

If we were actually at a construction site and were team members who had a common goal there might be need for the unskilled to come in and do some "tear down" work. Then there could be somebody (also unskilled) to come and to haul the garbage away. That (the destructive part) can be done almost by anybody. It's there that the analogy breaks down. In our Christian walk it may seem that the unskilled might be best suited for the task but really? It takes a certain amount of humility and wisdom to look to ones self while accomplishing the task that is assigned by God. Contrary to the opinion of many a fleshly man is not well suited for this at all.

Good post. :)

Bumping because I need to hear this and keep it in the forefront of my mind.

Have I said that I love this forum? Even the parts that are not completed and not yet fully submitted to the Will of God. That's like me, isn't it? I'm not yet fully submitted either. It's okay for me to remind myself that my faith is authored by God and is also finished by Him too. My prayer today is for one of reminder that the Lord God vindicate me and establish us <and me> for His Name's sake.
